Sill Shield: Protect your window ledges

My big dog is here to protect and defend our house. It is in her nature.

A strange noise outside such as the garbage truck or a kid screaming while slip-and-sliding on the front lawn is cause for Gigi to run to the front window and check out the situation.

She is protecting us. But who is protecting my window ledge from her nails?

The Sill Shield is a product which answers this need. Made of plastic (clear or white), these ledge covers are easy to use. Simple double-sided tape on the bottom enables the to stick to the sill. The shields are not permanent. From the company:

Whether you rent or own, it pays to make your place more pet friendly. Scratched window sills are unsightly and can be expensive to replace or repair.

Funny quote from the site:  “I know that technically the indoor ledge of a window is called the window stool. For obvious reasons I have decided not to try to market a ‘stool shield’ to pet owners!

The shields come in different depths and widths and even custom sizes are available, with the average price around $14.

I found the manufacturer’s other product of great use, as well:  Door Shield. It comes in clear and white. I like the clear Door Shield but in the photo at the right you will see the white Door Shield. Again, from the company:

NO TOOLS REQUIRED! Your order includes Low Profile Dual Lock Coins by 3M that attach your Door Shield easily and securely to any door. You can’t stop your pet from scratching your door, but you CAN stop your door from being destroyed!

Both products may be found for purchase here.

So, Gigi is still protecting us from noisy threats in the front yard by jumping up on the window ledge. I am happy to let her fill her need to protect, all the while my window sills are safe.

  4. Sigh. Old houses with custom made doors aren’t candidates and I am not about to replace my 1843 pine doors with fugly prefab composition jobs. It does give me food for thought as to how I can possibly protect my kitchen door from future abuse once it’s sanded and repainted. Plexi glass cut to size and screwed in place, inside and out. Why didn’t I think of that a couple of hundred claw marks ago?
