Pool party goes to the birds

I was out with the dogs today when my neighbor Diane came home. We got to talking about our birds and their propensity to make noise, especially when they’re feeling neglected. “We should get them together out at the pool and have drinks sometime,” she suggested. I agreed that would be fun and that we should invite our neighbor Jim and his caique, Pogo. Then I herded the girls inside and went back to work. Less than an hour later, I heard Jerry talking to someone outside. He came upstairs and informed me that Larry and I were expected at the pool in 20 minutes. Diane works fast.

Who am I to deny Larry Bird an outing with his avian neighbors? Book editing? What book editing? I poured some gin and grapefruit juice, checked that Larry’s wings were clipped, wrapped a towel around my shoulders so he would have secure footing and I would have poop-free clothes, and away we went. “Try not to scream too loud in my ear,” I told him. He ignored me.

Along with her bird Dusty, Diane brought popcorn, half plain for us to feed to the birds and half buttered and salted for us. Jim and Pogo brought cheese and crackers. Larry politely nibbled popcorn. I wondered if he could teach Bella how to take things without biting. Maybe not. He walked up to her a few weeks ago while she was sleeping and bit her on the nose.

We kept the birds separated, but they whistled and chattered to each other while we talked. It got a little warm, so we carried them over to the showers and gave them impromptu baths. Unfortunately, I had places to go and things to do, so it ended all too soon. But I hope we do it again.

Parrots rule!
