Just like our own Kim Campbell Thornton, a lot of pet lovers are allergic to their own dogs and cats.

Kim is one of the lucky ones, because apparently her allergy only kicks in when her dog is literally lying on her face. Not everyone is so fortunate, and that’s why her post couldn’t have been better timed.

We’ve been working behind the scenes to build a Dr. Marty Becker YouTube channel, and just this morning we’ve launched it with a baker’s dozen of my favorite clips from Good Morning America and ABC News. And one of those tips?

What to do when you’re allergic to your pets.

Tips range from veterinarian-recommended shampoos, special wipes that help remove pollen, dander and dirt, tools to help control shedding — hair being the vehicle that carries dander into the environment — and even the full-body coat the Golden Retriever is wearing in the photo, above.

If you’re one of the dog and cat lovers who sniffles, sneezes and weeps over your best friend, check out the video for other suggestions, including the most important tip of all: Prevent allergies in children by exposing them to animals, not protecting them from animals. Recent studies show that kids who grow up with pets have fewer, rather than more, problems with pet allergies as adults.

  2. Wow! This is better than re-homing your dog. Keep him… Love him… Just cover that hair!
