In 2009 our small breed rescue group took custody of over 200 mostly feral dogs from a Montana puppymill. They'd been held as evidence for eight months while their abuser fought prosecution.

The last time she had been raided, several years prior, she'd voluntarily signed over about 20 dogs to HSUS. HSUS killed every last one of them.

As for "most credible" -- really? You wanna go with that one?

This may have had something to do with her resolve to fight this time, and refusal to sign over the dogs and cut a deal early on.

Our 227 -- all in homes.

HSUS kills dogs. Own hands.

Not to mention them calling for the blood of the Vick dogs while simultaneously raising money for their "care" -- while at no time, thankfully, having custody of any of them.

"HSUS does not kill animals."

I say they do. YesBiscuit did an expose on "the Alabama 44" - dogs "rescued" by HSUS from a "hoarder" and then dumped into kill shelters. Shelters that were given no extra resources for these animals, even some shelters that used gas chambers for killing.

Several of those dogs are confirmed dead now, thanks to the HSUS "rescue". Others are "missing", whereabouts unknown, but as no one is talking, they too can be assumed to be dead.

Maybe HSUS didn't kill them with their own hands, but those dogs are dead just the same.

I'm not sure you can equate the HSUS with PETA, nor that "PetaKills" is equal to Humane Watch.

Humane watch is run by a man who is paid millions of dollars each year by the meat industry. You can read the site, but it doesn't make any sense as a site to help animals. However, the owner has said recently that he is giving some of the money that comes in to local animal shelters.

Humane watch does make sense as a site to discredit the whole humane treatment of animals movement, since HSUS is the largest and most credible advocate of humane treatment in the US.

The biggest accusation is that the HSUS does not directly rescue animals. They do sometimes help out overwhelmed shelters, but the adamantly state that this is not their main reason for existing. They state their main reason for existing is to counter the billion dollar lobbying done the various industries that want to use animals and use those animals without any regulation or requirement for humane treatment.

I admire your investigations, Gina. I would very much like for you to investigate Humane watch and HSUS in more depth.

However, the HSUS and PETA are not similar. PETA lied about killing animals. HSUS does not kill animals.

Back to slaughterhouses. It seems that government regulation is just aimed at the big boys, and the rest of us need not participate in the production of food. The separate bathroom thing is because they assume you're big enough to have a separate office for the USDA inspector that you pay to keep on premises to inspect the 400-500 animals you slaughter every day. USDA inspectors can't seem to envision a world where food is local and "done in" around the corner from where it grew up. A good book on the subject is "Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal", by Joel Salatin. I have to wonder how valuable all this inspecting is. We still get e-coli in the beef from facilities with inspectors on site at all times. Oregon has decided to increase inspections on our Farmer's markets. I heard that last summer a baker selling her goods at a local farmer's market had to change her labels and remove "Love" as an ingredient, 'cause guess what, it's NOT a real ingredient. I feel so much safer now that THAT'S cleared up!

I propose

"PETA, We Kill Because We Care" become a new motto.

Truth in advertising and all that

Good post on this from the KC dog blog. PETA writer "informs" others that they kill because they care. What a farce.
