Cash on the barrelhead: ‘Rescue’ raising eyebrows

It’s not often that the take-no-prisoners activity on the Fugly Horse of The Day blog veers away from its admirable outing of sleazy practices in the horse world, but this was too skeevy to ignore. Dogs go from L.A. to Canada, where they’re apparently placed without completed contract, home check or even meeting the prospective owners. Cash and carry!

Check it out.

And then, check out H. Houlahan’s take on the video over at Raised By Wolves.

  1. This is far from anything new. I have been writing/warning about dogs coming up from the south to north east to PARKING LOTS where clueless people wait in line to pick up their pre adopted dogs off trucks. Temperaments and health unknown. They have travel health certs, but almost always have tons of worms and costly intestinal issues. Most stories I hear, dogs were fostered after being sprung from the southern shelters in huge groups of 15 or more. Most are puppies. Some turn out fine, many are fearful and with a multitude of health issues. All are shell shocked from transport and often go to homes with kids who don’t understand that the dogs need time to decompress. Some come from rescue groups who are misguided and trying to save dogs, and others come from places where people are making big quick bucks and still others somewhere in the gray area in between. Makes me sick.

  2. I have gotten three dogs, and was not too savvy, but still, they all turned out well. One from a shelter, one from Craigs List, one from a neighbor.

Craigs List was great, the only for which I have a birth certificate and vet records.

I don’t understand the complete lack of thought some people into the process.

Take a look at the website for Cold Noses, Warm Beds. They put up a very convincing front, and while a Google search *today* brings up links to other pages with more information, from the look of things I don’t think one a year or so ago would have done. Possibly, but not prominently.

Blaming and shaming folks for being taken by plausible cons is not productive. Rather, as this post does, what we need to do is provide people with readily available information to help them avoid them.

Very true. They have a very nice-looking website, and sound really good on “paper.”

  5. Those pictures of animals on the website are “stock” shots…. not animals in the care of CNWB. Sadly there has been no response from Beady Singer about her practices.
