A Thanskgiving treat for lucky dogs

November 25, 2009

My dogs eat anything I offer them — from dog food to recipes I’m testing to leftovers — so often I use my friends’ dog to test recipes.

Below is a Thanksgiving treat recipe that all the taste-testing dogs enjoyed, from my own, “The Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook.”

Turkey Day Treats

2 cups diced sweet potato, cooked until very tender

1 and 3/4 cups flour (your choice as to what kind: rice, potato, oatmeal or other)

1 cup warm water

1/2 cup cooked turkey; shredded finely

2 large eggs

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. Mix together all ingredients. Mixture should be sticky but since different flours absorb liquids differently, if the mixture is too dry, add water until the dough mixes well.

3. Drop the dough by rounded teaspoon onto a greased cookie sheet.

4. Bake for 20 minutes or until the treats are golden brown.

5. Remove from oven, cook thoroughly, and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Variation: Use cooked pumpkin or squash in place of the sweet potato.

  2. We just take the easy route and give ours raw turkey wings. And the neck. And if we grill the bird, the back too (we spatchcock the bird so it cooks faster). They’d love to have them too, but we save the giblets for gravy.

  3. That spatchcocking thing is cool! I never heard of it before.

  4. Spatchcocking - no, I haven’t heard that before either. Wonder where the practice came from? Wonder what the origin of the word is? Hmmm…..

    “Here, google, google, google….”

  5. ah ha!

Spatchcock is short for “to dispatch a cock (as in a young bird).”

  6. I’ve done this, but never heard the name.

Love it … sounds so dirty.

  7. I think some of the males of our species might see it as intimidating rather than dirty.

The first time I said it in front of husband - he ever so slightly crossed his legs.
