A Thanksgiving treat for finicky felines

November 24, 2009

It’s easy to cook (or bake) for my husband and my dogs: They’ll eat anything I make. Which I enjoy, by the way!

But cats are not so easy.

Xena, our tabby, is particularly finicky but after using her as one of my taste testers for my book “The Ultimate Cat Treat Cookbook” I’ve come up with some recipes that many finicky cats willingly eat. Here is a Thanksgiving treat recipe you can share with your cats.

Thanksgiving Treats

1/2 cup cooked turkey; shredded finely

1 tablespoon finely grated carrots

3 tablespoons unseasoned canned pumpkin

1. Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender. Puree for 20 seconds.

2. No cooking needed. Serving size is a teaspoon for a kitten or a tablespoon for a cat. Feed from a spoon, your finger, or use as a training treat.

3. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Variation: If your cat is hesitant to try new things, add a tablespoon or two of the water from canned tuna fish packed in water to the mixture before you puree it.

  1. I like the cover of the Cat Treat Book - it looks like a fun book - and from one who did nothing but home cook during the Pet Food crisis, good pet cookbooks are a gem. Hope all have a Happy Thanksgiving Tomorrow.

  2. This is a great idea, Im always trying to think of healthy ways to add some extra calories in our kitty’s diet. Due to a health issue, she is always struggling to keep weight on and she is very finicky on top of everything. I will definately be giving this book and that recipe a try, thank you!

  3. OK we got this book for Christmas so will be trying some of the recipes for our kitty, who thinks human food is from outer space. Wish us luck! And dont worry, if she refuses them, its not because the recipes arent good, its definately the cat. :-)

  4. OK I tried the chicken & stars recipe this morning….as I suspected, our kitty said “no”, plain and simple. No if’s, and’s or but’s about it. Its not surprising as this cat thinks if it doesnt come out of a can or a bag, its not real food and she acts like we are trying to poison her. This is the strangest cat we have ever had, she will eat no human food, no chicken, no beef, no turkey, nada. So I think the next recipe I will try is the beef & bisquick. I feel like Im in the movie, “Julie & Julia”, just the cat version! :-)
