John's comment, I think, summarizes my thoughts on pets and expense. If you can't afford to care for a pet, the pet population is enhanced if instead you offer to care for others' pets, help a senior with their pet care, or work with a local animal shelter providing care for animals who need it.

My advice about rehoming your pet, if you cannot afford proper food and veterinary care, stems from a situation we have here in Oregon I hope others are not facing. Renters scooting out on leases and people leaving foreclosed homes abandon animals inside to starve. Much better, when finances strain to find some one who can care for your animal.

Later today I'll post some organizations that can help owners having a hard time at my website, www.thiswildlife.com.

Thanks for blogging about the panel, Kim! Participating was a privilege.

Great article - there is money to be saved, but only in the right areas. The most important thing is for people getting a new pet to research the cost before they do so.

"Moderator Darlene Arden notes that the formulas have changed for Pepto Bismol and Kaopectate have changed and are no longer safe for pets."

I have used both of these over the years for my dogs & most everyone I know who has a dog still uses them. What's going on? Does anyone know?

My cats' favorite toy is a small crumpled piece of paper. They go bonkers for that.

I should note that when Carol says cats don't need toys, the context is that they don't need the latest, greatest, most expensive toys or a new toy every week. You can make toys or rotate toys instead of always buying new ones.
