He was clipped and dyed for the film. The absolute darkest goldens come in that coloration, and the field line dogs tend to have less hair. Many look like flat-coats. Flat-coats can (accepted as per the standard) come in liver. (They can also come in yellow/gold, but it's not permissible. The yellow/gold ones look like field-line golden retrievers.)
