The Diva dances: I love Zenyatta
By Gina Spadafori
November 8, 2009
Yes, you know I am a racing fan. It has been my privilege and honor to have seen Zenyatta win in person three times. Alas, yesterday was not one of those times: I had to watch a taped replay after, from 500 miles away.
There has never been one like her, and I will never see one like her again. This, I know.
I do not care what you think about racing. I do not care what *I* think about racing. I know there are problems, many, and for this one day I do not care.
Today … I salute Zenyatta, the charismatic Queen of Racing.

She’s so hard-wired for this, all problems in the horse racing world aside, it would be cruel not to let her run. She’s going to be a handful in retirement, I’ll bet.

Yes, I’m glad I’m not the one who has to tell her she won’t be parading around in front of a crowd of tens of thousands. It is really hard for those who love their job to learn the ring isn’t theirs any more. I have a working dog of almost 13 who has issues with retirement. Today he stole a ziploc bag off the kitchen counter, ate the contents and then proceeded to shred the bag for good measure. I was ready to blame the puppy but he was outside with me when the deed was done. :D

I wondered if you had seen her live this time. But boy, what an amazing race.

The Year of the Filly, that’s for sure.

Good grief, Gina. I didn’t know you are a racing fan. My day job is at Daily Racing Form, where I’m the bloodstock business writer. Love, love, love Zenyatta. And how ‘bout that Street Cry: sire of Zenyatta AND Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, all in the same week.
