The Yellowstone herds probably vary in genetics as they are widespread. According to the research I did, several of the herds do have cattle genes. It's reassuring to know that some are still pure, though.

We have several bison ranchers in the immediate area. They do well in rugged country and don't need predator protection for the most part except when there are very young calves. They do require special handling and fencing though!

Always deserves a second look when you are driving along and suddenly spot a herd of bison grazing next to highway 20

We have the Terry Bison Ranch (NOW!!!! with Camels). One of the worlds best wildlife experiences is to be in the middle of the Hayden Valley in Yellowstone when the bison herd is moving across the road... you can (almost) imagine the scene 200 years ago

Although the last of the black-colored Eastern bison went extinct in West Virginia in 1825, a local farmer has a herd of them (of the Plains subspecies). These animals get out all the time.

Now in rural West Virginia, it's not unusual to have cattle getting out and running down the road, but it is something when you come across a herd of bison heading down the road, tearing up fences, and generally causing trouble. This herd has a giant bull that is easily the largest animal of any sort in the county.

You can see another herd of bison a few miles west of Denver on each side of I-70. They're owned by the city of Denver and live in a protected park with an awesome panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains.

I agree, Tammy. Although I'm glad they are still here - at least in a few places.

This is a really cool story! I am always quite amazed by Bison. We went to South Dakota a couple years ago, and watched the herd in Custer there for a while. Somehow, they feel ancient to me. Like they don't belong in this time and place.
