Of those 50 percent who own a scratching post, I wonder how many scratching posts are buried in a closet or a "junk room." I have had a few friends who complained about their cat scratching the furniture yet they didn't have any proper alternatives for their cat. They were amazed how their cat's sofa scratching behavior changed when they supplied scratching posts in places convenient for their cat. I know of one out there that doesn't hip screen their mobility dogs, and I've know known FIVE that have had to retire before the age of 6 for hip dysplasia!
