Thankfully, SB 135 was signed into law.

The governor played a nasty trick, threatening to veto 700 bills b/c of his water deal.

That is a patent abuse of power and shouldn't be permitted. Checks and balances exist for a reason, but to manipulate and misuse those checks, like how the Governator has done, is unacceptable. I can only be thankful he'll be termed out in 2011.

Glad to see AB241 get the ax. HSUS isn't fooling anyone w/their legislation by numbers agenda. We know exactly how it works and we're not buying.

AB241 specified nothing at all to do with the humane treatment of animals but was simply a numbers game. HSUS has admitted in lobbying training sessions that they want a number, any number, limit enacted into law because numbers can be changed easily in the future - 50 today, 5 or less in a few years. An inobtrusive rider could be attached to an unrelated bill that would drastically reduce the number which is why it was so important to stop AB241.

If passed, AB241 would have drastically and negatively impacted breeding programs of working dogs like Canine Companions for Independence, Guide Dogs and the kennel in Southern CA (whose name escapes me at the moment) which breeds dogs for law enforcement. With the supply of working dogs from Germany drying up (and getting incredibly expensive) it is VERY important that California still be able to breed these valuable and essential animals.

There is no "magic" number for a threshold of humane treatment. Some people cannot manage even one animal while well set-up facilities with sufficient staff can handle 100 or more. When I lived in Sonoma, I was a volunteer at The Assistance Dog Institute which far exceeded AB241's 50 dog limit but, with the wonderful trained staff and dozens of volunteers, the dogs there had marvelous lives and grew up to do great work.

Thank you, Governor Swartzenegger!
