Totally agree with this. And it all starts at the grassroots. My siblings love dogs but all they want are pure breds. It's my job to promote the rescue shelter solution at our next BBQ. I have 3 rescue dogs and they are all great.

A rescue dog is a kinda designer dog, they are intelligent and healthy and, like all dogs, they love you to death.

As a bit of an ad, you can get free listings for Rescue Shelter websites at Woofahs Pet Directory. Maddies is a featured site.

I think the Ad Council is right on with this idea (although I do agree with LauraS about white collar crime)... at the end of the day, what really matters to the vast majority of people is that they get the pet they want. And it's important to get the word out that there are lots and LOTS of pets available that will be pretty easy to live with.

Unfortunately, every time an adoption fails because the animal has health or behavior issues, that reduces the likelihood that not only will that family consider adoption in the future, but their close friends and family may also be dissuaded by the cautionary tale.

I love this campaign! But I don't like the PSA "white collar". Somebody who is arrested for a crime should not have their pets confiscated and sent to a shelter to be adopted out. The accused is innocent until proven guilty. Also, even if found guilty, the crime this person is accused of has nothing to do with the care of animals. Confiscating and rehoming the dog is not justified.

It's very hard to describe my part -- I've done everything from proof-reading to writing original material to giving feedback on just about every aspect of the campaign to handling a lot of the social media aspects -- it's been an incredible opportunity to contribute to something I really believe in while doing work I love with people I respect and admire. It's pretty much up there with the work Gina and I did during the pet food recall as some of the most rewarding and engrossing work I've ever done.

How exciting! I have been waiting for this and telling everyone who will listen!

I am so interested to see how this has impacted things a year from now. How wonderful to finally have had the resources for market research. Yay!
