kateThis is the week I look forward to all year: My brother, niece and I head for San Diego, for an extended weekend of baseball (Mets-Pads) and horse-racing (Del Mar and Los Al).  Sunday, we’ll see the great racing mare Zenyatta.

This year’s trip is also special because it’s the last time we’ll be together before Kate goes off to college. She’s already on the rodeo team at Fresno State, and she’s taking her Quarter Horse with her.  The picture is Kate and Peppy at her high school a couple days after the graduation ceremony, picking up her diploma.

My neighbor and friend Judy will be caring for critters, except for Faith, who’ll be staying with my friend Pam, who’ll be taking her to work with her at her shop, LaunderDog & More. A few days away from me and her mom for her first time ever will be really good for Faith, especially since she’ll be with with Pam, who’s a wonderful trainer.

And on to the stuff you shouldn’t miss:

Heather Houlahan offers some must-read updates on the story of the English Shepherd rescued  in a Montana cruelty raid. The progress these dogs have made is inspiring, and it’s time for them to start going to forever homes.  And if you want a vet’s eye view of spaying and neutering, go to the top of the blog, but not while eating. … Speaking of spaying, Pet Connection BFF Dr. Patty Khuly (who’s quoted in one of our upcoming article for Parade magazine), writes about why calling something “a simple spay” downplays the seriousness  of this surgery. … Also, don’t miss her post on Angel Eyes, a product sold to keep stains from forming on the eyes of little dogs. You will surely be surprised at how it does that. … On SmartDogs, Janeen writes about how troubled dogs can learn to achieve normalcy. Good read, this!

On Did a Cat Shit in Here, a tale worthy of a CSI episode, with a bonus vid of one of the funniest bits in TV history. … and Terrierman’s been on a roll. Just go read it all. (But don’t miss the post on Dalmatians and behavior meds.)

  1. Hmmm… you sound so confident about leaving Faith for a weekend, Gina!

No matter WHO they stay with, it’s a terrible thing, leaving the baby for the first time!

We have already canceled two weekends out in August because the pup arrives shortly before and I just KNOW I won’t be able to tear myself away.

I left Fable with my hubby for a week to visit family, and while I am sure you’re right and it was good for her to spend some time away from me while still so young (she was about six months at the time) it was still painful.

Luckily, your weekend sounds busybusybusy and that should help. :O)

I’m sure Faith will enjoy her weekend away… I know Fable was much less upset at the separation than I was!

  2. Oh, you KNOW I’m a wreck. This puppy has been with me from birth. But I also know it will be GOOD for her to be with Pam for a few days. :)

Thank heavens for good friends who are also tops with dogs!

  4. I came *this close* to taking her with me … and leaving her with co-blogger and ace trainer/author Lizzie P while we were at the track. :)

  5. Ha! I spent DAYS before we left for our vacation trying to figure out a way to sneak her into the van without anyone noticing. ;O)

Thankfully, the hubby is *wonderful* with the dogs and generally responsible. In a pinch, we have neighbours from heaven who have experience with cats, dogs, birds and reptiles. We sit for their doodle once a month, and they sit for our menagerie once a year.

I still say we’re getting the better end of THAT deal. lol

  6. And I was looking forward to having Faith! I have been telling Archer for weeks that a puppy was coming to play with him!

    Maybe next trip! smile…..

  7. Liz, maybe you should thank your lucky stars that Miss Faith is staying with Pam. Not only is Faith teething now, but she’s also testing … everything!
