Are you at work with your dog? Let us know!

June 26, 2009

How’s it going? Problems, tips, success stories? Share your stories here. Friday is my day to work at home, so here it’s take myself to the dog’s work day.

We’re going to have to be working on some manners. Puppy Faith is 12 weeks old on Monday, and last night she learned that she’s physically capable of jumping onto the couch. Now, I allow pets on the furniture, but only by invitation. She’s going to have to learn the rules.

She’s also wearing a light cord on her collar now, because she has decided the cats should be chased. No, dear, they don’t like that. I had hoped that Clara’s rebuke (the white spot on her nose in the picture below) would have taken care of the problem, but no … I have to help enforce the “no chasing the cats” rule.

Problem is: It’s very tough to get tough on a face like this:

  1. I’m National Sales manager at a raw pet food company. One of the perks is being able to bring my dogs in to work with me. They have to stay in the office area, obviously - but they’re Frenchies, they’re quite content to sleep underneath my desk on my feet. Every so often, they’ll get up, go for a wander, snag a treat from someone else (another perk - free cookies!), and the come back for a nap.

In fact, last week I took Delilah in with every day, since her labor was imminent - so imminent that she went into labor under my desk last Thursday. Photos of her pups are the office screen saver right now.

One of my puppy buyers is a lawyer, and Gaston goes to work with her every day. He has his own seat in the office’s front window, with a sign saying “My name is Gaston, and I am a French Bulldog. Please don’t tap on the glass”.

  2. I work from home for the most part, so “take your dog to work” is the standard for me. My greyhound is not a very good conversationalist but he makes sure I take breaks occasionally to scritch the dog. He’s very good for the blood pressure! :)

  3. Well, we were doing just fine. Kasey was as good as gold, people were coming down to make him sit for treats. He was sitting beside my chair on his bed with his chew toy when the HR guy came down and said “I guess I asked the wrong people” and said I had to take him home.

    I didn’t go back.

  4. How unfortunate! (Except for that not going back part.)

  5. Yeah, I was pretty ticked off, especially since I can, with 99% certainty, tell you who complained. And this particular person has 5 whirling dervish grandchildren who regularly pop into the office, scream, cry, touch things they shouldn’t….but I’ll shut up now.

  6. I think you should put salt in her coffee. :)

  9. Niki, the collie boy, “walks me to work” most mornings. This involves, at the most, 20 feet from the living room to the studio. But I’ve come to realize that even a little thing like this gives him job to do and he’s very pleased to have gotten mom to work safely. He seems to take it pretty seriously.

Then he flops down outside in front of the door, so I can’t get back out without him noticing, I guess. :0).

Sometimes in the afternoon he’ll come in and hang out, but it’s usually when I’m not painting. I suspect he doesn’t care for the oil paint fumes, even though I have an expensive hi-tech VOC filter going most of the time.

There’s usually a cat or two around, too. Oh, look, there’s one on my drawing table Right Now!

  10. Yes, my Frenchie is at work with me today. ;-)
He’s played with a Pug, a sweet Pittie boy, a mix, a Retriever and had zero interest in the Westie. And, he refuses to poop today, so he’s been gassing all his visitors. I think this is one of my favorite holidays ever.

  11. Well, for the Dot, it’s just another day of the week hangin’ on the couch with me while I work away on the computer. I really prefer her to bosses and co workers, especially when my main computer decides to go on the frizt. She hasn’t asked me once where I’m at on that project! We’ll worry about it next week, won’t we Dot? :)

    The cats, as usual, are clueless and blissfully sleeping away totally unaware how hard the Dot and I are working in the other room! {grin}

  12. Why yes, yes I am. But the girls are agitating for “Take Your Dog Away From Work Day.”

  13. The challenges of working at home with one’s canine companion (in my case, a fax-attacking Sheltie) got me started writing about dogs in the first place. My current office dog will pretty much snooze until around 4 p.m., when she lets me know in no uncertain terms that the work day needs to finish. Now.

  14. My issue would be go someplace where I can leave my dogs at home.

I train dogs, so I am surrounded by dogs, all day, every day.

I took my Lab pup to the field today for the first time in three weeks since a little mishap that left her lame (and out of training) for a while.

We were accompanied by a client dog who is also aspiring to be a bona fide reetreever.

I am exhausted. They on the other hand, would like more bumpers and birds. And water.

    I would like a nap.
