Things pet-lovers should worry about — but don’t

In Today’s Parade magazine, our Dr. Marty Becker and I have an article on the things pet-owners worry about too much — milk chocolate, silica gel packets — and those they don’t worry about enough, such as candies sweeted with Xylitol.

Check to make sure you know what you should be worrying about. The article is on the Parade Web site, right here.

  1. I wish it were true that pet toys were safe, but I see cat toys all the time that are very poorly made, with glued-on bits to make cutesy faces and weak, poorly attached elastic to dangle them by. I think you can guess where they’re made, too.

  2. Great list, I think I’ll include it in the info going to new owners and adopters.

But no mention of onions? Bad news for some dogs, they cause a mild to severe anemia and like grapes the individual reaction is impossible to predict.

Three other common household goodies that I know dogs who have either succumbed to or gotten tres mal over:

    corn cobs
Compressed wood pellets for wood stoves
    Artichoke leaves and cores

I know there are a billion more, but those are the ones that stand out for me. :)

On the bizarro side, I once had a 50 pound dog eat an entire 5 lb bag of un-cooked Hinode medium grain rice. When I saw the line about dough and expansion, I immediately thought of the rice, but I suspect Rags adventure was more of a one-off than a national trend.
