Update: SB 250 passed and now heads to the California State Assembly.

***

Call today to keep SB 250, more forced spay-neuter from the haters and their well-meaning  but ill-informed supporters, from advancing in California.

From Laura, picking up from comments:

Voted to abstain on SB 250 in round two:

Correa (916) 651-4034
Moreno Ducheny (916) 651-4040
Pavley (916) 651-4023
Wolk: (916) 651-4005
Wright (916) 651-4025
Yee: (916) 651-4008
Negrete-McLeod (916) 651-4032
Simitian (916) 651-4011

The above senators will be getting a LOT of pressure from Sen. Florez — SB 250 author and Senate Majority Leader — to change to a Yes.

If you haven’t already called, call the offices above and say:

“Hello, my name is [your name]. I live in [your city’s name] California. I’m calling to thank the Senator for abstaining on SB 250, mandatory spay/neuter for dogs and cats. I’m asking the senator to continue abstaining when it comes up for a reconsideration vote later this week.”

This will make them understand we are still watching and also appreciative of their position.

Abstaining is just as good for our side as a No vote, but is politically easier for a senator to do on a bill that he/she opposes but is sponsored by a member of his/her own party.

Mandatory spay-neuter increases pet deaths, as people dump more animals because they have no access to low-priced or incentivized spay-neuter. It makes a crime out of caring for trap-neuter-release feral cat colonies. It wipes out reputable, ethical and compassionate breeders, which is a boon for out of state and out of country puppy-milling scum.

Mandatory spay-neuter is NOT SUPPORTED by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the ASPCA and Alley Cat Allies, among others. Even the HSUS has not taken a position.

This is a dreadful piece of “sounds nice” legislation with a killer kick.

Call today.

  1. I can’t get through!!!

    Comment by Christie Keith — June 2, 2009 @ 9:36 am

  2. Keep trying! We are hearing word this morning from staff from the key senators that phone calls are running HEAVILY in favor of SB 250. Given that we outnumbered them by at least 20 to 1 at the recent committee hearings, we can do a lot better.

SB 250 is scheduled for a re-vote today. PLEASE, the 8 key state senators need to hear from many more Californians who oppose SB 250 or it will pass. Please ask your family, friends, neighbors, and club members to call the 8 key senators. It’s easy, and it only takes 5 minutes.

  3. I’m leaving voice messages but NO ONE is picking up in person.

    Should we be faxing, too?

    Comment by Christie Keith — June 2, 2009 @ 10:03 am

  4. Faxing is good too… if you can get through. Many fax machines there are busy or not answering.

    Comment by LauraS — June 2, 2009 @ 10:08 am

  5. Yes, it only took about five minutes, tops.
I got a live person on five calls and an answering machine on three.
Some wanted my name and zip code, the others seemed to have a tally sheet only and didn’t care about name or location.

    Comment by Susan Fox — June 2, 2009 @ 10:29 am

  6. I got through on seven of eight faxes. All calls done. :)

    Comment by Gina Spadafori — June 2, 2009 @ 10:40 am

  7. I haven’t gotten a single live person! I have an electronic fax so don’t know yet if they’ve gone through.

    Comment by Christie Keith — June 2, 2009 @ 10:43 am

  8. Staff for the 8 key senators say the phone calls are running 20 to 1 in FAVOR of SB 250. I don’t see how this is possible, given that when bodies were actually counted this year — at senate committee hearings — SB 250 opponents outnumbered supporters by around 20 to 1.

    Comment by LauraS — June 2, 2009 @ 10:47 am

  9. About four of the ones I called didn’t want location or zip code. Are they getting slammed with out of state calls from AR orgs?

    Comment by Susan Fox — June 2, 2009 @ 10:50 am

  10. Seems fishy Laura, where were they yesterday?

I dunno, just seems like there is some weird stuff going on

    Comment by JenniferJ — June 2, 2009 @ 10:50 am

  11. Got through on ALL MY FAXES! Love eFax. It’ll just keep hitting until it goes through.

I got the same on the phone. Some didn’t care name or ZIP. I INSISTED I give them both, and told them what I do, and who ISN’T supporting forced spay-neuter.

If that doesn’t work, I really think we could split the state and let the bubble-heads in Hollywood be happy forever with JM and the killing in forced spay-neuter LA.

But then, I’ve always been in favor of two separate states. EVERYONE in NorCal is! :)

  12. We do want San Diego, though.

  13. Faxes sent.

    Comment by Cait — June 2, 2009 @ 10:59 am

  14. And Pismo Beach.

    Comment by Susan Fox — June 2, 2009 @ 11:05 am

  15. Yeah, we need to figure out a way to include San Diego..

A five foot wide corridor right down five until it spreads back out at the Golden Triangle maybe?

    Comment by JenniferJ — June 2, 2009 @ 11:05 am

  16. Loop out around the Channel Islands?

    Comment by Susan Fox — June 2, 2009 @ 11:09 am

  17. Laura, are the service and police dog folks geared up this time around?

There has certainly been more inertia to overcome than I would have liked in terms of getting people moving to protect there dogs and breeding programs

    Comment by JenniferJ — June 2, 2009 @ 11:10 am

  18. People get ALERT!!!!-fatigue. I remember this phenomenon from when we were fighting the Puppy Protection Act, and the ARs use it fully to their advantage.

    Comment by The OTHER Pat — June 2, 2009 @ 11:23 am

  19. Faxed everyone, and called Sen. Yee, who is my own Senator, and left a long, impassioned voice mail message.

But still no human beings… how are you guys getting through???

    Comment by Christie Keith — June 2, 2009 @ 11:24 am

  20. I have no love for San Diego. They can have it.

    Comment by Christie Keith — June 2, 2009 @ 11:24 am

  21. Gina, is Senate Pro Tem Steinberg your senator? He is reportedly turning screws to get yes votes on SB 250. Anything you can do to encourage him to back off would be appreciated.

    Comment by LauraS — June 2, 2009 @ 11:28 am

  22. I am not seeing as many groups fighting SB 250 as I saw with AB 1634. I think The OTHER Pat is right, people get tired of it and turn off. I’m sure tired of it.

    Comment by LauraS — June 2, 2009 @ 11:30 am

  23. Laura, I’m going to call Gina and make sure she sees your question…

This is true — and you also have to keep in mind that the opposing team is no doubt contacting everyone THEY know and asking them to support their side of the issue. So it doesn’t always boil down to the people who care one way or the other, as much as the people who have the bigger address books. Politics is hell.

  25. The funny thing about splitting the state from up here where I sit is that what one element wants is to make common cause with southern Oregon, draw the border at about the southern edge of Humboldt County and declare the Great State Of Jefferson, thereby eliminating all you urban tree-hugging, latte-sipping liberals so that the rural northern counties can get back to what they do best- destroying the environment through unregulated resource extraction.

Any word yet on when the vote is going to happen?

    Comment by Susan Fox — June 2, 2009 @ 11:35 am

  26. I’ve gotten most of the bulldoggers moving.

    Apathy is a killer though.

Hopefully folks will start to wake up, but I was hoping it would happen without having to wait until the eleventh hour.

I totally agree with you on this. That’s one of the reasons I am so opposed to extreme positions, they tend to be counter-productive.

    Comment by stellaluna — June 2, 2009 @ 11:37 am

  28. Also, some of the framing of why we should oppose this issue was HORRIBLE. Not Laura, not Alley Cat Allies — which is why I’m following their lead on this.

But I’ve had some really bad, stupid messaging coming my way about just what’s wrong with this bill. Most of us didn’t get what the problem was until very recently, a lot of the opposition was just, “This is AB 1634 reborn!” But on the surface of it, it’s not. And to get people to look beneath the surface you have to, you know… BREAK UP THE SURFACE AND SHOW THEM.

Which Save Our Dogs and Alley Cat Allies have done, but at least as far as it penetrated my own awareness (which was distracted by the Prop 8 fight issue here in CA), not until just the other day.

    Comment by Christie Keith — June 2, 2009 @ 11:43 am

  29. Sen. Steinberg is mine, yes. I will call again.

    Comment by Gina Spadafori — June 2, 2009 @ 11:49 am

  30. It doesn’t help that they seem to be able to keep voting on it until they get the result they want. What’s up with that?

    Comment by Susan Fox — June 2, 2009 @ 11:57 am

  31. Which vote, Susan? SB 250 … or the Great State of Jefferson? :)

(Which I learned about when I was in Crescent City!)

    Comment by Gina Spadafori — June 2, 2009 @ 12:41 pm

  32. Ha! SB250. Maybe some of the alert fatigue could be avoided if the rest of us were more aware of how the system works and why we might have to call multiple times.

    Comment by Susan Fox — June 2, 2009 @ 1:14 pm

  33. SB 250 passed today in the State Senate. It now moves to the Assembly, where it goes to a policy committee. Don’t know which one yet.

  34. if I was a CA res I would be on it but great to know you people are - and JenniferJ I hope your rescued boxer/bull dog is doing better, very touching and practical reality in your personal history of rescuing him in your comment - thank you for sharing your insights, rang true to me - I live in the community where the 400 (?) mini eskimo dogs were rescued by HSUS and many others (no local rescues involved though really or so it seems) Wish HSUS would join the NO KILL Nation efforts I can only imagine what a huge impact that would have if they did -

  35. Hey no bad mouthinbg San Diego! smile…Many of us in San Diego care, too! The phones, emails, and faxes have been buzzing since early this morning.
