Look outside before leaving, or pay the price

The dogs and I were on our way out for some exercise. Dodger automatically sits by the front door, or any door, but I look down at him every time and just beam.
We walked out the front door to discover the letter carrier had just left and had taken five steps in the snow. Both dogs tried to run to him. I’m not clear about exactly what happened, but each dog went on separate sides of the porch post. I had one leash in each hand and my arms wrapped around the post.
Oh great.
I was thinking how much my physical therapist is gonna love this. I fall more than any other patient he has, and the reason always has to do with my dogs. I could just hear it: “You fell off the porch because your dogs wrapped you around the post, huh?” I have fallen off the front porch before, by the way, and my 8-pound ancient poodle flew out of my arms (he was fine. I wasn’t).
I stood there for a few seconds while I tried to figure out how to get untangled. The letter carrier was just standing there laughing and watching. I finally let go of Ginger’s leash because I knew she’d run right to him. The Blur cannot be let loose for a second. My snow bunny boinged over to him and begged for attention because she clearly never gets any at home. Having a free hand allowed me to get the bouncing setter in the car while the letter carrier got in some terrier lovin’.
Note to self: When leaving the house, look outside before actually stepping out the door.

yeah, when I was lying on the ground writhing in pain from what turned out to be a torn ACL, the EMT guys couldn’t grasp the “flexi wrapped around knee when pit bulls go zoomies” thing. The guilty parties were standing as far as possible away from me as the leash allowed. So much for doggie sympathy. The PT didn’t want to hear my story either.
Dogs suck.
ok, not really.

Been there, done that - at the groomer’s house in the country, with my 2 standard poodles, who saw that big ‘ole Tom Cat as soon as I pulled up to the garage, waited patiently until I had them leashed and out of the car - then gave chase. I didn’t want to let go because the older one, Mike, was a runner and loved cats (they have squeakers), so I held on for dear life and ran behind them trying to figure out how to stop 120 lbs of pulling poodles when I spied the house coming up - fast - and figured I’d just let myself hit it, that would stop the forward movement. It did - mine, that is. In spite of my stupidity I was smart enough to turn my head so I didn’t break my nose, but I looked oddly like a smooth fox terrier for a while - one side black/blue/purple, one side white…. Even though I let go of their leashes, the poodles came back and the cat got away. The most serious injury was to my groomer’s house - cracked siding.

Phyllis, I vote for thinking that they went around opposite sides of the post on purpose so you would Not be pulled off the porch… again.
When I got a new dog last year, I carefully chose a smaller/lighter dog so that my aging body would not be pulled over. So my 30 lb. mix and I somehow intertwine feet, and I end up in a bad fall with the paramedics having to come. At least with dogs, it’s always accidental - I’ve had cats that understood geometry well enough that they could always figure the exact angle to walk in order to intersect with my feet as I walked across the room…
