Is it April yet? ‘Cause I’m really tired of writing about the Obama dog

People mag gets the scoop: Rescued Portguese Water Dog. In April. Name to be determined, but probably not “Frank.”

I’m not writing about this again. I’m delegating, damn it.

If just one millionth of the attention paid to the selection of the first dog were paid to, oh, I don’t know … food safety … wow, imagine.

On the other hand, I cried when I read about Socks.

Unrelated: House rabbits rock.

  1. I’ll write about it! :O)

All the PWD people are hoping “Not Frank” isn’t another Liberty, I suspect.

  2. LOL, if you’d waited ten seconds to post this, I’d have done it for you… we were writing at the same time. ;)

I deleted mine. I recycled it at PetHobbyist, but had to remove the snark because it was Pet Connection-specific.

  4. Why do they need to rescue a PWD? Did it fail it’s Water Test because it can’t swim and they need to throw it a life preserver? Seriously, PWDs aren’t normally found thru Rescue. PWDCA doesn’t even maintain a list of available dogs. The best the Obamas will be able to find is through contacting breeders for retired show dogs.
Unless of course, there are High Volume Breeders ( if there aren’t many now, there will be after the Obamas get one) out there on the Internet and given the incidence of Addison’s in the breed, I certainly wouldn’t go that route, because I would want the support of a responsible breeder to advise and console me when dealing with the disease.
PWDs are great dogs, active, agile, smart and natural comedians! I’d hate to see the breed ( or any breed) incur more problems brought on by Media over exposure.

  5. Maybe Batman will get to know socks on the Other Side—he just left me 6 days ago at 15 yrs. of age.

Tuxedo cats do look all dressed up, ready to go to a dinner party at any time of day or night.

So many stars in the sky tonight!

  6. Sorry I did not capitalize the word Socks.

I remember, now, that 6 days ago one of the vet technicians at the emergency vet hospital had a tuxedo cat named Socks. All her three cats enjoyed her 11 yr. old dog. She treated Batman and us (my husband and I) with a depth of kindness that I so appreciated in my great grief.

Thanks for bringing Socks passing to light, Gina.

  9. I think it should be covered. It’s important that everyone, even the president, get their pets responsibly. It sounds like Obama really is trying to adopt a dog that is appropriate for his family instead of buying one. People that care about pets, and especially about shelter animals needing help, would want to make this as well known as possible.

Write about it, I say! And for a novel change of pace, don’t just write about it, THANK the man for being responsible.

So, no, not a lot, but not none, either. And yes, they may wind up going to a breeder to find a returned or retired dog, if they’re set on a PWD. And with any breed there are advantages to going with a responsible breeder, especially for a family of dog newbies.

But I am absolutely mystified as to why the Obamas’ efforts to choose an appropriate dog for their family and to if possible rescue rather than buy should provoke snark and invocations of future heartbreak.

No, wait, I do understand why—and if they decide to buy from a breeder, they’ll get the same thing, and the breeder will be presumed guilty of being a puppy miller until proven innocent.

We have. We have. We have.

And although I’m very happy they are being deliberate, careful and responsible in choosing, I also think we face a lot of issues a great deal more important, and would prefer people put some hard thinking into those.

  13. My husband, my daughter, and I all enjoyed the video of the rabbit and the cat (above).

The rabbit was tougher than the kittycat!

Don’t blame me. Blame Retrieverman. I found the link to the article on his blog and in the spirit of generosity, had to share.
