Instant rabies test too good to be true?

February 18, 2009

A couple weeks ago we blogged this item from Medical News Today, about a saliva test for rabies. As we always do on medical stories, we check into what the veterinary community is saying, and all seemed OK there. And then we try to put the news into context, in this case what such a test would mean if brought to market.

That’s pretty much how the discussion went: The cost of the proposed test, how many lives (human and animal) is might save and so on. And then we moved on to the next thing.

Terrierman smelled a rat:

[W]hat did I know about the company and the people making this new rabies vaccine being touted in the pet press? She mentioned that she had looked up “V. James deFranco, MD” and he appeared to be affiliated with a company selling some sort of oral spray that contained an extract of deer antler velvet “used by movie stars” as well as various products for anti-aging, insomnia, energy and weight loss.

My bullshit meter went through the roof.

Too bad ours didn’t. Here’s the rest.
