California pet owners appear to be safe from new tax–for now

The Sacramento Bee reports that a tentative budget agreement has been reached that would temporarily–sure–increase the state’s sales tax by 1 cent on the dollar, increase gasoline taxes by 12 cents per gallon, raise the state’s vehicle license fee and increase personal income tax across the board. It does not mention taxing veterinary services. Apparently, calling legislators can make a difference. Read the rest here.

[Update from Gina: I just corresponded with my former colleague Jim Sanders, the reporter on the linked Sacramento Bee piece. He confirms that as far as he know now, the veterinary tax is OUT. We have a call in the California Veterinary Medical Association to double-check.]

[Update from Gina, part II:] The CVMA has confirmed the veterinary service tax is not part of the current proposal hammered out today. But it could STILL be part of the final 2009-2010 budget. So keep calling your elected representatives and tell them that taking care of a family member is NOT the same as a round of golf.]

  4. LOL. Since both of us work at home and are able to walk to many of the places we need to go, we can live with that part.

  6. I think after AB 1634 and the vet tax, legislators will be considering animal issues some kind of third rail they touch at their peril.

  7. *sigh*

It is a mess and being addressed far too late.

I work from home too but live in an area where there is little public transportation and you have to travel by vehicle to get anywhere.

How about doing something creative with those on subsidy?

I live in an area where the roads are a mess and we are still waiting for snow clearing due to lack of service plows…a private group has been hired to clear the avalanche because CalTrans apparently can’t.

Down in San Diego they are having some trouble with services but I was impressed when I found actually set up a school to teach skills to the unemployed instead of just wasting funds.

And yep, I doubt they will approach the pet services taxation again.
