Holiday pet safety: Catch the video

This morning’s segment on Holiday Pet Safety for “The Morning Show With Mike & Juliet” was one of the best I’ve seen. Lots of information, a fun fact/fiction format, cute pets (loved that cat Dr. Becker is holding) and … well, it just went great.

Interesting that — contrary to popular wisdom — Dr. B said that the holidays are a great time to adopt a pet. As one who welcomed an 8-week-old hell-on-wheels Golden Retriever puppy into her home the day after Christmas, I can attest to the joys of holiday adoptions (and the challenges, too; you gotta know what you’re doing).

You know, Susan, I think I’m with Dr. B on this. And I’ve changed my thinking along with my thinking of the no kill movement.
Old way: People are bad, they can’t be trusted to make good decisions, we must ban holiday adoptions.
New way: Case by case, with respect for the idea that many people are capable of making intelligent decisions and following through on their responsibilities.
If you have a break around the holidays — if you’re a teacher, say, or a college professor — why not adopt? You have time to get that pet off to a great start!
Things can be worked out! When McKenzie was a baby, she hung out with a friend of mine for the first eight weeks after she arrived here. It was great socialization, and great crate and travel training, since I went to work at 7 and my friend’s business didn’t open until 9 a.m. So … puppy McKenzie got to chill in a crate for a couple hours five days a week. She’s still very comfortable in a crate, and isn’t THAT a good lesson?
We must work with people on ways to get to YES ADOPTION not looking for every reason to say NO, many sweeping and arbitrary.

I too was glad to hear Dr. B on holiday adoptions. Every situation is different. If there is going to be lots of chaos, or the family is traveling, probably not a good idea. But if the family is home for the holidays - that would seem to be ideal. Especially if you were, say, introducing a new cat to your tribe and had to be there to supervise.
Also wanted to say that the cat that Dr. B is holding has to the calmest kitty I’ve seen in a long time.

I LOVE that little black and white dog. Pittie mix, do you think? Looks a tiny bit like a Dane too…

Obviously I’m with Dr B on this, too. Having that time between Christmas and New Years to grapple with the force of nature that is my Allie was invaluable. Case by case is definitely the way to go if — and it can be a big if — everyone is willing to take the time to do it right.
