Mike, FYI ... we've written extensively about PETA's kill rates. It is important to notes that the figures come from the Commonwealth of Virginia, which requires shelters to report the outcome of animals taken in for the purpose of adoption.

The "study" wasn't "published" by the Center for Consumer Freedom, which is an industry front group out to discredit any attempt to put a leash on activities of food and tobacco companies, among others.

The CCF has publicized the kill rates widely, to their credit but for their own reasons.

I love it how PETA wants to comment on how the vice president should have adopted a dog from a shelter. This is coming from a group that does not run a single shelter in the United States. Over the last 10 years PETA has recieved through its adoption program 25,112 animals of those 25,112 animals only 3,083 were found new homes and 21,339 were put down. Their kill percentage is 85% and adoption percentage is 12.28%. This study was published by the Center for Consumer Freedom in April 2009. Maybe PETA should follow their own advice and start treating animals under their care before they go after others.

57.Regarding the latest Yahoo news item—-
Biden’s Puppy Breeder: “Never, Never, Never Again” — Woman is vilified for selling a pedigreed pup to the Bidens. — By KAREN ARAIZA
What is becoming of this country when a person can not do something GOOD without being ‘vilified’???
Nixon was also ‘vilified’ when he got a dog.
Johnson was ‘vilified’ when he playfully pulled his dogs ears up (the dog enjoyed it).
FDR squirted his dog with a water bottle.
George Washington chopped down a cherry tree because he was unhappy in the fact that he did not have a dog.
What the hell is the matter with America when such ‘vilification’ spouts forth???

I feel it is the individuals choice as to where they get their pets. I personally would not buy a dog from a pet store or breeder but that's my choice because I live in America! I hate it that so many animals are put to sleep but me or no one else can save them all.

I also own a purebred dog. Here's why. You never know what could happen. Suppose someone gets sick, or you have to move to a place where you can't have a dog, or the dog is too rough, or whatever. Nobody expects to have to give up a dog when they get it, but you just never know. The point is, it is much easier to give away a purebred dog than a mutt.

I hope that all of you numbskulls that are accusing Biden of killing a dog have adopted all of your children. It would seem to me, following the same logic, that anyone who gives birth is actively murdering one of the millions of parentless, starving children across the world. Absolutely idiotic.

I agree that far too many people and even some dog trainers use this collar incorrectly. If the collar isn't high on the dog's neck and you are doing more than a light correction, you're doing it wrong.

I would also like to see this collar not be available at the big box pet store to anyone who has a couple of dollars. People really should be trained to use the collar and shown what can happen if the collar is used improperly.

My husband and I bought our GSD Claudia from Linda Brown in Feb. 2007. We immediatly noticed a limp and had her checked out. She has sever hip dyplasia from birth. When we had her spayed, the vet said she had a twisted uterus and was infertal. She is a beautiful, sweet dog, but her myriad of health problems would lead me to Never recommend this breeder to anyone. Period.

Also, NO PAPERS and it's been over a year. She is just no good.

Every trainer needs to understand the tools they are using and the principles that make them effective. If you're going to use a prong collar, you need to understand that it doesn't take a lot of pressure to get a response from your dog because - frankly - it hurts. So if you're going to use a prong collar, you need to learn to apply enough pressure "to get the job done", and no more.

I don't like prong collars for a number of reasons. But way up on the list is that people DON'T understand why the tool works, and so it finds its way into the hands of people that use it with the gentleness and subtlety of a bull in a china shop. Many of these same people refer euphemistically to the prong collar as "power steering for your dog" and have convinced themselves that the collar doesn't hurt the dog at all (without then asking themselves just WHY it works so well, then?) And in the hands of those people - yeah - dogs can get hurt.

So I don't like prong collars. But if people insist on using them, then they need to first make sure they understand how and why the tool is effective so that they DON'T cross the line into being inhumane.
