Nominations now open for most out-of-touch pet product launch of 2008

November 14, 2008

And the first nominee is: Diamond Dog New York!

Fresh from the media release that dropped into the Pet Connection mailbox this very afternoon, this very important information:

Announcing “must have” jewelry line for any pet lover, just in time for Holiday 2008. Diamond Dog New York (DDNY) launches its first collection of glitzy and rich but playful charms, rings, earrings and necklaces. The superbly stunning and ultra chic pet inspired line is expertly crafted in 18k matte yellow gold and white gold and encrusted with  micro-pave’ diamonds, hand-cut onyx and sapphires. This is a bold form of uncomplicated glamour and truly a timeless collection. Available in several styles and most importantly, made with non-conflict diamonds, DDNY also makes custom pieces available for pets.

Well, since they’re non-conflict diamonds, put me down for a dozen … not!

  1. Poop Freeze! “Just Frost & Toss with Poop Freeze” It’s an aerosol spray that freezes poop to solidify it and make it less — distasteful — to pick up.

I’m pretty sure it’s just liquid nitrogen in a can. We used to play with it (liquid N, not dog poop) in the liquid inclusion laboratory in grad school - and though IF you handle it safely, liquid N is a LOT of fun - a plastic bag is a lot cheaper and and a scoop is a lot more environmentally correct.

The product is much better suited to stupid grad school tricks than to pet poop management.

  3. Hmmm, poop freeze. Actually, I know when it could be useful since my dogs do have episodes of loose stools that are difficult to pick up. I wipe up what I can and promise to remember to come back and get it later, but often forget.

If anyone has anything left in their 401k, I doubt that diamonds for dogs or dog-lovers will be high on their list for Holiday gifts, but anything that will boost the economy is okay by me.

  4. I have such strong sales resistance that I’m not even aware of any pet product launches.

Alan Beck of Purdue, who has sold himself out as an expert on ‘pit bulls’ in a couple of court cases even though his interest is elsewhere has been suggesting that a robotic dog is the best kind of pet for a few years now. That’s a perennial joke, though.
