Dog saves kittens from fire in Australia

Here’s your Sunday “feel good” story, from MSNBC.com:
A dog was hailed as a hero on Sunday after it risked its life to save a litter of newborn kittens from a house fire, rescuers said.
In a case which gives the lie to the saying about “fighting like cats and dogs,” the terrier cross named Leo had to be revived with oxygen and heart massage after his ordeal. Fire broke out overnight at the house in Australia’s southern city of Melbourne, where he was guarding the kittens.
Firefighters who revived Leo said he refused to leave the building and was found by them alongside the litter of kittens, despite thick smoke.
The kittens and dog are fine; I haven’t been able to find out what happened to the kittens’ mother.

I saw this story and have been trying to find out any information as to what happened to them AFTER. They say the dog was “back at the house” the next day: they show him lying on an old mattress outside this burned out little house, all by himself. And those kittens were tiny, too young to be away from mother. Does anyone have any idea what happened to them or to this poor dog? It made me so angry to think they’re calling him this “hero” (which he certainly is) but then to just abandon him there after. I hope, particularly with the coverage this got, that someone is doing something.

The mother cat had been lost in the incident, but they found her and the cats and leo have been reunited with the family http://cms.firehouse.com/conte.....ctionId=46
