Safer driving for people … and safer riding for dogs
By Keith Turner
August 24, 2008
It may soon be illegal to drive a car in California with your dog (or multiple dogs) sitting on your lap.
The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Bill Maze, R-Visalia, barely passed the State Senate by a vote of 21-17, and will now be sent back to the Assembly — where it already passed — to vote on the bill’s amendments. When passed, the law will go into effect July 1, 2009, after which violators could be fined up to $35 if they are caught driving with an animal in their arms of on the lap.
Maze said the bill is not aimed at celebrities such as Paris Hilton, who has been seen driving with her dog on her lap, but rather to help the ensure safety and well-being of all humans and their pets while driving.
“Animals have a mind of their own. You can’t control them,” he said.
