Saying goodbye to the Dog Days of Summer

August 13, 2008

Dog in carThe astronomy-inspired “Dog Days of Summer” officially ended yesterday, so it’s time to start thinking about tying up those loose leashes before the hot summer days are gone and autumn sneaks in.

For many dog-loving families, it’s time for one last canine adventure before the leaves start to turn.

When any travel is involved, it’s a good idea to prepare your pup for the road with a few preventive measures to ensure a safe, secure and healthy journey. We’ve mentioned this before, but it’s always good to keep up to date when it comes to the health and safety of our dogs.

The Elm Leaves in Elmwood Park, Il. (don’t you just love some newspaper names?) offers a nice little story about preparing you pup for car trips, and does so in a quick, concise fashion:

Seat your pet securely in the car, either with a harness, crate or barrier. For pets with visual cue motion sickness, putting them on the floor of the car where they cannot see out can be helpful.

If your pet is not accustomed to traveling in the car, take some short trips, gradually increasing his time to get him used to longer rides. Bring a favorite toy and blanket for comfort.

Your pet should have a light meal in the three hours before travel. Keep them hydrated with small amounts of water.

Make frequent stops, allowing your pet time to exercise and relieve himself. Be sure your pet is wearing identification tags or has a microchip in case he runs away or gets lost.

Never leave your pet in the car unattended. Always be careful with an open window – pets may jump out at the wrong time, or get stuck in them.

Be sure your pet’s mandated vaccinations are up-to-date, and ask your vet for a health certificate to bring along. Pack any medications your pet might need. Research local veterinarians and emergency clinics in the area you intend to visit.

The Daily Comet in Lafourche Parish, La., also has a story about pet travel tips by writer Laura McKnight.

If you and your crew live in England — or are planning a trip there anytime soon — the Times Online offers some insight into dog-friendly beaches of all sorts and sizes. Just remember to take your “lead” with you because some beaches only allow pups on a tether.

So get out and enjoy this last gasp of summer vacation by preparing your pups for a positive experience as you navigate the planet.

Wagging happy tails to the Dog Days!
