Dog-loving drivers in Minnesota woke up to the news in August that Farmer’s Insurance is including pet insurance in their auto policies, according to a story in the Rochester Post-Bulletin.
In a change enacted Aug. 1, all new Farmers Insurance Group customers in Minnesota will have $600 in coverage added to their policies to cover costs related to the injury or death of a household pet in the event of a vehicle accident or theft. The extra coverage will kick in for existing policy holders when they renew their policies.
There is no extra cost for the pet coverage and there’s no deductible, but customers are required to have both comprehensive and collision auto coverage to receive it.
The story also points out that the additional coverage only applies to pets who are part of your family and doesn’t cover friends or other pups riding in the vehicle with you.
Farmers says that it will expand the pet coverage to 29 states by early 2009. Progressive Insurance made news last year when it also included coverage for pets injured in auto accidents.

Progressive & AAA offer Pet coverage. Its a $500 max. Not per pet from what they told me on the phone when i was inquiring about things earlier this week. It is max $500 to cover vet bills, etc for any animal injuried in your car.
