Chickens? In a men’s mag?

I’ve been trying, late at night, to catch up on my reading, but the pile of magazines and library books just seems to keep growing. I did discover, however, that the green craze has even hit men’s magazines. The current issue of Men’s Journal has a spread on planting a kitchen garden, with a sidebar on keeping hens. No, not that kind of hen. You know, hens like Gina has. Ragan Sutterfield writes:
The over-easy mixture of protein and cholesterol you get at IHOP is not an egg. It’s a commercial knockoff, as close to the real thing as Folger’s crystals are to fresh ground coffee….Which is why your next pet should be a hen.
Apparently, people are even keeping chickens in their Manhattan apartments. Maybe I could have one in my no-yard Lake Forest condo. Replace the grill with a coop. Hmmm.
Cat lovers are enjoying National Geographic’s Science of Cats, about the evolution of the mysterious feline. I missed it earlier this week, but it airs again on Saturday, June 14, and Tuesday, June 17. I believe next month dogs get their day on the NG channel.
Gratuitous Harper blogging: I was reading a fashion magazine a few minutes ago with Bella at my side and Harper in my lap. All of sudden Harper noticed the back cover, which featured an admittedly scary looking model advertising Armani cosmetics. Harper started barking at her and wouldn’t stop (and she’s not a barker). When she did this yesterday at the bag of leaves left on the street by the gardeners, I just sat on it so that she’d be willing to come up and explore it. But laying the magazine down so she could look at it didn’t work. Jerry covered up the picture with his hand and she stopped. Removed it; she started barking again. Turned out it was the eyes. If he slid his hand down so that the eyes were uncovered, she started up again.
I’m not sure if Armani should get a different model or pay this one more. She certainly got Harper’s attention.
In the interest of science, I just showed her the photo again. No interest, except to give it a lick.

I heard about the whole chicken pet thing some time back.
In fact I included a “breaking news” video about chicken pets in my neighborhood in January 2008 in my blog for my town.
I find it amusing to live in a small town and was playing with video…getting better at it.

I’m currently working on petitioning to have our town’s ordinance changed to consider chickens as pets instead of livestock. There are many good reasons to do so… not just fresh eggs. My story was featured on our local NBC station’s news last night! Check out my site, I hope it won’t take long to get the town to change the ordinance!
