Settlement today in Menu Foods case?

May 21, 2008

Thanks, Mike, for tipping us. From Newsday:

CAMDEN, N.J. – Details of a legal settlement over contaminated pet food blamed for the deaths of perhaps thousands of dogs and cats are to be made public on Wednesday.

Around 300 pet owners have sued Streetsville, Ontario-based Menu Foods Income Fund in U.S. District Court since the contamination was discovered more than a year ago.

The company announced on April 1 that it was settling lawsuits with pet owners in the U.S. and Canada, but terms were not disclosed.

Details of the deal were due in U.S. District Court in Camden on Tuesday, but lawyers in the case asked for a 24-hour extension. A hearing on the settlement agreement is scheduled for May 30.

“Perhaps thousands.” Thanks, Newsday, and ain’t that better than whatever crap the FDA is still handing out?

We’ll update as we can.

And also, this incredible piece Therese has on her PetsitUSA blog:

For her science fair project, a seventeen year old high school student from Mississippi developed a faster, less expensive way to detect chemicals such as melamine & cyanuric acid in pet (and other) food. Natalie Saranga Omattage won a $50,000 scholarship for her efforts.

  1. Why am I not surprised to see no news release or update from this “settlement” in NJ. Although I am not one of the pet owners in a class action, I sure would like some resolution to this so I may begin to again try to get my thousands of dollars in vet bills reimbursed—-something we all were told publically by Menu Foods on the weekend of March 17-18, 2007. My very personal private paperwork has been sitting somewhere at Crawford and Co or Menu—-I wonder when and if I will ever get it back…this process to reimburse pet owners with documented acute renal failure and feeding the recalled food is as difficult as trying to contact them for info on the recall last year. To me this is such another insult to our pets and their owners…

  3. Hi,
I had to get an attorney, you know the supposed form’s that menu foods sent to us was illegal? They were false, they tried to trick us by making us think that form was all you needed to get your money back. False, the supreme court of the united states stopped them from sending ant further false documents out. I handed everthing they sent me over to my attorney. It’s not too late. If you want to get any money back, I would suggest you contact an attorney. There is class action lawsuites active in every state.

  6. CNN.com and MSNBC.com are using the AP version, which refers to “deaths of perhaps thousands of … ” [emphasis mine]

I’d sure rather see “what many reputable sources believe to be thousands,” but … still …

We’ve sure come a long way, no?

  8. hi,

i would just like to say tha no matter what the peoplel settle for in this case, it will never bring back my bestfriends. i lost three dogs who were perfectly healthy till they ate the tainted dog food. i have medical records to prove my case. but no amount of money that the company hands out will make my pain go away. only when they can look me in the eyes and say they are truely sorry and actually mean it will my heart begin to heal.
    thank you
