With all due respect to fellow pet lovers, if you are posting here and have computer access, do a SEARCH!!!! There are HUNDREDS of pet suppliers on line who provide a staggering array of pet car travel safety and restraint options. With no connection to the manufacturer but just complete satisfaction with the product (which comes in three sizes and is now on sale for a price almost half of what I paid for mine) I recommend this... the single "deluxe" handles my 16 pound "Cockeranian" and he LOVES it!! Once I had taught him a prudent path through the car to the seat, he can get from ground to "in the seat in his favorite viewing position" in under 3 seconds! I realized it wasn't ME he wanted when he was in my lap--- it was the view to the outside it provided! It also seems to help for those with carsickness and car anxiety. Being able to see the road calms many car-avoidant dogs. I’ve seen cats do well in them too…

Here's the link to the car seat:
http://www.petstreetmall.com/Extra-Large-Pet-Car-Seats/7356/2716/

I have seen this model as high as $99 elsewhere, so at $59.99 (on sale; 7/1/09) this is a great price! It will attach to either back or front seats but DOES require a headrest to wrap the upper support strap around. AND, over the 5+ years I have had mine, one strap clip did break. The 2 solutions there were:

1) a short bungee, but it expanded in time so the seat sagged; plan 2) go to a shoe Repair and they can attach a new clip to the manufacturer’s original strap, or 3) (My favorite) go to your purse collection, grab one of the clip-ended sturdy leather shoulder straps you never use, wrap it around the head rest base until it is the proper length, and off you go!

NOTE:
If searching the array of choices, use term: "dog travel seats."
Also (Great Dane owners!), for the car restraints and harnesses try SEARCHing with the term: "dog car restraints harness"

Happy hunting, and safe travels for you and your four-legged motoring pals!

It's NOT illegal to have pets unrestrained inside a vehicle in California. It IS, however, illegal to have them <a href=http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/waisgate?WAISdocID=11228722218+1+0+0&WAISaction=retrieve rel="nofollow">loose in the bed of a truck</a>:

23117. (a) No person driving a motor vehicle shall transport any
animal in the back of the vehicle in a space intended for any load on
the vehicle on a highway unless the space is enclosed or has side
and tail racks to a height of at least 46 inches extending vertically
from the floor, the vehicle has installed means of preventing the
animal from being discharged, or the animal is cross tethered to the
vehicle, or is protected by a secured container or cage, in a manner
which will prevent the animal from being thrown, falling, or jumping
from the vehicle.
 (b) This section does not apply to any of the following:
 (1) The transportation of livestock.
 (2) The transportation of a dog whose owner either owns or is
employed by a ranching or farming operation who is traveling on a

auction.

Is it illegal in CA to have your dog unrestrained in the car? If so could you perhaps give me a site were it states that as a way of proof to people I know?

It's illegal to have unsecured dogs in the open bed of a pickup in California, but you had them in an SUV. You also can be generally cited if, in the opinion of the law enforcement officer, your dogs present a distraction that would prevent you from driving safely.

You can also be cited in CA for putting your DOGS at risk if you leave them in a vehicle on a hot day.

Did the officer at LAX actually write you a citation? Because if so, it will have the reference to the violation written somewhere on it, and you can <a href=http://california.lp.findlaw.com/ca01_codes/ rel="nofollow">check that reference</a> to see what code or statute he or she thought you violated.

I was just stopped by an ingrate who calls himself a policeman in LAX airport. Said he was citing me for carrying my (4) dogs in the back of my SUV. Can anyone tell me if this is really against the law? If so, it's news to me, and I will certainly be contesting this citation. To the LAX wannabe cop: "get a life"!

Actually Crime Dog there is already a law that applies to all jurisdictions in the state. California Vehicle Code, section 21700 states "No person shall drive a vehicle when it is so loaded, or when there are in the front seat such number of persons as to obstruct the view of the driver to the front or sides of the vehicle or as to interfere with the driver's control over the driving mechanism of the vehicle."

That pretty much dis-allows any dog in the front seat that isn't wearing a seat belt and being well behaved. Driving with a child on your lap is not merely "wrong" it's against the law - as it should be.

And if your standard is - anything that puts my family at risk. Perhaps you should stay off the road, only then will you have better than average odds of keeping your family safe. You should probably know what you're talking about before you start ranting.

I see the inability to read with any degree of comprehension has popped up again (along with the typical pet-hater claims of "dog owners are stupid" and "dog-owners have psychological problems.") Blah blah blah boy that's new ... <em>not.</em>

Mr. Crime Dog, you're an idiot. No one here is suggesting that driving with a dog on his or her lap is advisable or safe.

We're questioning if it's necessary to have <em>yet another law</em>, this one specifically addressing an issue that could be -- and likely is, in many places -- already covered by statutes that forbid driving with unrestrained passengers or cargo, or with other driver distractions.

Take your pet-hate and your ignorance elsewhere.

If you were in my jurisdiction and you killed someone while driving with a dog on your lap. I would ask the court to sentence you to fifty years. You know that driving with a child on your lap is wrong. Don’t you? If you here justifying driving with your pet on
Your lap you may have a more serious physiological problem. It’s not cute! It’s not
Funny! It’s not only dangerous for you. But, If puts my family at risk. I guess what they say is true. “ There are not stupid dogs. Just stupid dog owners!!” Shame On You!!
