Hop, hop hooray for the House Rabbit Society

Few people are able to single-handedly change the way we look at something, but Marinell Harriman is one of those people. She wondered if a rabbit could be a loved, well-cared-for and happy indoor pet instead of a miserable, neglected animal living on a wire floor in a tiny backyard hutch.
Surprise! Given “house privileges,” rabbits react with glee and are wonderful companions — playful, affectionate and quiet. Many will even use a litter box reliably.
Encouraged with her discovery, Harriman wrote the House Rabbit Handbook: How to Live With an Urban Rabbit” and suddenly things got better for a whole lot of nice bunnies.
She went on to found the House Rabbit Society, which now operates the world’s only shelter just for rabbits (in Richmond, Calif.) and has inspired many similar groups likewise working to educate people about how wonderful rabbits can be if allowed to be part of the family.
Next month, the House Rabbit Society celebrates its 20th anniversary, which roughly coincides with the rescue and rehoming of 20,000 rabbits.
Many congratulations to this group and all the wonderful work they’ve done. Donations appreciated, memberships welcome, adoptions encouraged.
