The information you've provided in the last year has been invaluable. I've always read labels and watched what my family ate. (I made all my kids' baby food so I was sure I knew what was in it.) I kept a garden in the summer for fresh wholesome produce. What I didn't know was how unregulated the pet food industry is, how lacking in import inspections we are, and exactly how many of our raw ingredients are now coming from overseas. My dog now eats much better, and I've learned about what else I need to be watching for at the grocery store. I'm putting in another garden plot for spring and winter vegetables and researching urban chicken coops. Do I feel safer because I think the government is doing more? NO! Do I feel better educated and informed for having visited this site? Yes! Thank you all.

The only thing that makes me feel safer are the pet blogs. Thank you Gina, Christie, Itchmo and the bloggers for keeping me up to date and educated about what I buy for my pets and family.

This last year has taught me ignorance is not bliss so I do much more reading and researching and sharing what I find with whoever will listen-or read my emails! -this is for our pet food and human food supplies!

Thanks for your contribution in keeping our pets safer!

I think safety is a huge concern in this country right now. The pet food recall (and toy recalls) have both made me much more critical of what I purchase for my family, but I still worry. I am at the point of making my own baby food so I can avoid feeding my baby "downer bananas" that may inadvertantly get into the jarred variety. And I can't bring myself to eat most meat anymore. I think some of the congressional changes proposed will help, but you will still have issues with companies that don't have a moral or ethical compass. I think bottom lines to these companies are what are most effective, so being able to research the products on a site that reports adverse reactions or problems (as is being proposed in congress) is a good idea, as long as it's used properly. I personally have switched to an all natural cat food not made by any company involved in the recall. Having a clearinghouse of information that allows the consumer to make an informed decision would be helpful.

I think the companies that did this are trying very hard to recover, but for many of us that is a moot point. We lost our meezer almost a year ago to the recalled Hill's Rx diet feline dry m/d food and I recently saw Science Diet's "Feeding is Believing" ad campaign where you tell your heartwarming story of how Hills helped your pet. It made me wretch. You could even submit before and after pictures! My "after" picture of my cat's ashes is fabulous. I digress though.

I am a long time reader, first time poster and you guys are fabulous at keeping us all informed!

I don't feel safe, but thanks to all the news I've read here, I feel safER in the sense that I shop with more awareness now. I try to avoid certain foods, particularly produce imports, and look for the "Grown in USA" label. I don't kid myself into thinking everything's fine, but I hope I'm at least reducing the food risks for the humans and dogs in our family.

This can't be a good thing either. JBS SA is going to be owning 30% of the US meat packing industry.

I was picking up cat food yesterday, and I noticed Nutro is reduced to giving those packets away (3 with a bag of dry food or something). I don't think they'll ever recover.

Unfortunately, I don't feel safe. Given the recent recall of meat prompted by the HSUS video... Honestly, if we can't even police our own food supply how can we be sure imports are safe? But thank you for your tireless reporting, a year later I check here several times a week to make sure Science Diet isn't going to kill my cats, especially since a year ago I bought the Iams that almost killed my sister's cat. This blog is one of the very few websites in my toolbar. :)

well, I DO feel safer... thanks to you and Christie, knowing that you're staying on top of this issue and using this blog to communicate to us.

I think you must have saved the lives of many dogs and cats.
