Vet-friendly DogCars are destined to do the dirty work

The next time you are shopping for a previously-owned vehicle, it might be wise to ask the seller about the vehicle’s last owner. More specifically, you should try to find out what they did for a living.
Because if the former owner of your future ride was one of our loyal, local veterinarians, you just may want to reconsider your purchase.
A cute story by Dr. Patty Khuly details her dilemma when shopping for a vehicle to replace her aging sedan. Since her practice often requires her to make house (or barn) calls, she needed a vehicle a little more suited to her responsibilities — such as transporting terminally ill animals to the hospital.
That’s because most suburban small animal vets aren’t doing house calls on mostly well pets. In fact, the vast majority of mine are euthanasias. Because big dogs who can no longer walk comprise the bulk of these, it’s inevitable that we’d need space, glorious space to transport their remains back to the hospital.
Dr. Khuly proceeds to provide a little insight into the . . . how should we put it? . . . less glamorous parts of being a vet.
Until last year when I bought my four year-old Lexus RX-300 (fancy, no?) I’d been trucking them around in the back seat of my 1994 Lexus sedan. This is not recommended, by the way, as the seats are sufficiently tilted so that any stray bodily fluids accumulate in the impossible-to-reach dead zone between the back seats and the trunk. Yuck!
OK then . . . let’s file that under TMI, shall we?
Thank you, Dr. Khuly, for your dedicated service toward keeping our pets happy and healthy. Thanks also for sharing those intimate details about your profession and making it crystal clear why we should think twice when buying a second-hand vehicle from a veterinarian. You just may get more than you bargained for.
