Not safe! Our DogCars.com editor Keith Turner has been busy today, with a blog post here and also one on the DogCars.com blog. Over there, he writes about proposed legislation to ban driving with a dog on one’s lap:

A California lawmaker has introduced a bill that would make it illegal to drive with a dog on your lap.

Not only is it distracting for the driver, says Assembly-member Bill Maze (R-Visalia), but a loose pet can cause dangerous disruptions by getting “tangled up in your steering wheel” or under the driver’s feet.

Really? Amazing!

It would seem that the dangers of driving with a dog sitting on your lap would be a no-brainer. Who in their right mind would do such a thing? Answer: Those without brains, I guess.

So in order to protect the rest of us — those with a few brain cells left — from the erratic driving of a person with a lap dog, the good lawmaker is attempting to make it illegal to do so. It’s still too early to know what chance the bill has of passing, but support appears to cross both parties.

Here’s the rest. For the record, we absolutely recommend pets travel secured, whether in carriers or with harness restraints, for the safety of all involved.

  2. My mother thinks I’m a bit of a meany because I insist that Addy be either in her car harness, or her crate, when she’s in the car.

My sister lets her Lab ride loose in the back of the car. Stella’s perfectly behaved, will never cause an accident—but I shudder to think what will happen if there ever is an accident.

  3. Not having dogs but afraid either of my cats will get under the brake or steering wheel, I use a carrier when I take either Batman or Brandy to the veterinarian.

I successfully entered your contest just now and am waiting to see what the newsletter is all about. Thanks for making it so easy, Gina, and I thank Black Dog for doing all that work.

  4. Yah … they said there was an errant PEAR code. Gee, and I usually put all the fruit in the kitchen.

    Anyway … it’s fixed now.

Oh, and Heather: One of my brothers is a firefighter. He told me that one. Yech!

  5. Gee soon California is going to be having laws that tell you what you can and cannot name your pet. Aren’t their any more pressing concerns for CA legislators than companion animals? (Not that I would ride with my dog on my lap, but really…)

  6. It is sad that we have to have rules that should be a non-issue. Common sense just isn’t very common unfortunatly. The same people would be up in arms if someone did the same with an infant. Yet they don’t get the risk to their own dog. The lights are on but no one is home.
