Westminster: The Terrier Group

The Sealy, BIS at the AKC Nat'l ChampionshipsBetty Anne Stenmark of Woodside, California, is judging the Terrier Group. I interviewed her years ago about Greyhounds and greatly enjoyed talking to her. I have to admit that I’m not especially fond of the terriers. Too noisy and active. I like my dogs laidback.

There was a trend for a while of handlers wearing flashy clothes. Sequins were especially popular. I’m not seeing that so much tonight. Especially as the Terrier Group walks in, I notice that the handlers appear somewhat drab. That’s a good thing. While it was fun playing Handler Fashion Police, the focus should be on letting the dogs shine on their own.

I do love Smooth Fox Terriers. They’re so sculptural. But, of course, that’s not the best reason to get a dog.

The Glen of Imaal was just up. It looks like Dandie Dinmont without the stylized trim. I see that comedian Bill Cosby, who co-owned last year’s top-winning Dandie Dinmont, is back to Lakeland Terriers this year. His dog hasn’t made it to the Group this year, though; instead, the Lakey representative is Ch. Hi-Kel Terrydale Soldier of Fortune.

Here’s the Miniature Schnauzer, the only member of the Terrier Group not originating in the British Isles. We are told that it was creating by breeding the Standard Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher. Guess that makes it a designer breed.

Scottish Terriers openly feel superior to their owners, according to the announcer. Certainly the one in our neighborhood bosses his owner around when he feels that Luis has stood talking to us for too long.

Big crowd response to the Sealyham Terrier. I like the Westie. He doesn’t look as perfectly styled as the breed did for a while. I’m always glad to see a more natural look.

Oh, excellent! The Smooth Fox Terrier has made the cut. Love that head, but I won’t be surprised if it goes to the Sealy.

And the Sealy it is, with the SFT taking Group IV. The Sealy also won at Eukanuba. “It’s deja vu all over again,” Joanne says.

  1. I love the wire coat Fox Terriers and the one that looks like a lamb (I know next to nothing about dogs…bet you wouldn’t have guessed, huh?).

  2. The lamblike one is the Bedlington Terrier, but it doesn’t have a very lamblike personality.

  3. Why was there no Dandie Dinmont terrier in the terrier group tonight (2/11/08)?

  4. If you want to see pictures of the Sealyham terrier, the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer Chester County section has a photo of him and his owner on the cover. The story and photo are here:

After reading the article, I tried to convince the Terrierman that HE should post a photo on his blog of him holding one of HIS dogs on a tray over his head, but he’s too busy voting for you-know-who in the VA primary today! ;-)

Some people have no priorities! ;-)
