The candidates are dogs, but what kind?
By Gina Spadafori

Over at A Dog’s Life, Nancy continues to muse on the thoughts of Baltimore Sun Mutts blogger John Woestendiek regarding what kind of dog each candidate would be.
I’m with Nancy: McCain’s a pit bull. He’s a strong, laid-back, gregarious dog who can survive a lot of punishment, won’t start a fight but certainly won’t back away from one. Woestendiek says he’s a pug. No, no, no a thousand times no. A pug would rather enjoy life from the couch. McCain is no pug.
The rest … I can’t decide. Clinton seems a tad border-collie-ish to me, but Obama I can’t peg at all, dog-wise. Edwards (now out, of course) is a field-bred Labrador (like a border collie in the brains and drive department, but friendlier and a good guy to spend a day in a duck blind with). I keep seeing Huckabee as a bluetick coonhound, or maybe a beagle. Romney … well, a guy who’d put a terrified dog on the roof of a car … I just can’t see him as a dog at all.

I see Obama as an borzoi, saluki, or afghan hound- all grace, lanky, and oh my can he run.
Romney is a petshop toy chihuahua reject - impossible to housebreak, nervous, thinking he’s bigger than he is, but definitely more likely to have the squirts than actually do anything productive. Should never have been bred in the first place, but I’m sure somebody out there loves him.
Ron Paul is a Min-Pin. Lots of barking and looks ferocious when out of scale.
I see Clinton more as a poodle. Popular, willing to carve a better looking dog out of fur, but at the heart still remembers the original purpose of the breed. And poodles are very popular winners of class, and that’s why she was picked- groomed to win.

I instantly thought of Obama as a sighthound, although I can’t decide which one. I don’t see Hillary as a Poodle, though; maybe one of the working breeds.

Strikes me as obvious that Obama should not be a purebred at all, but rather the best kind of mixed breed dog (and no, not “designer” or “hybrid”). I see him as a Shepherd/Lab mix - popular, common, smart, funny, amiable, approachable.

How funny! I thought of saluki for Obama, too - smart, competitive, highly goal-driven. Or maybe a Pharoah Hound. Definitely a sighthound, I think.
For Hillary, I think a terrier - Cairn, maybe. Friendly, self-possessed, and tough, occasionally a bit snappish. :) (Border collie works, too…)
(And I agree on McCain - Pit all the way.)
