Marty + Martha = It’s a good thing

Our Dr. Marty Becker, still jet-lagged from celebrating his 30th (30th! congrats Marty and Teresa!) wedding anniversary in the South Pacific, just dug into his snow-bound Idaho home yesterday and is now digging out again today to hustle to New York City. The reason? He’ll be live on the Martha Stewart show on Thursday.
OK, now I’m jealous. Although you couldn’t tell it from my home, I adore Martha Stewart. I think she’s smart, funny and creative, not to mention extremely hard-working. Plus, she loves dog, cats and chickens. Her taste very much matches my own, although, again, you couldn’t tell it from my home.
Did I mention I’m getting pet chickens this spring? It’s true. Cute ones that lay speckled and colored eggs. Like Martha’s chickens.
Here’s the link to the show, so you can figure out local channels and all that.

I’m thinking about adding a few chickens to our household, so please, please blog your experience!
I would like to get a rare breed, but research on the internet has only tossed up big mid-west operations that sell in quantity, don’t sex the birds and seem to pack and ship them with the expectation that some will die. It makes me queasy to think about it.
I’d like an alternative because right now the only humane option seems to be local rescue chickens, which, actually, would be fine too.

Sorry Gina, you have MUCH better taste in dogs than Martha.

I’m so jealous you’re getting chickens. That’s my dream. But for now, all I have is chicken books. I keep wondering, though, if I could put a chicken coop on my tiny balcony.
