Web 2.No: Otter doesn’t want to be your friend
By Gina Spadafori
January 24, 2008
Since the beginning of the year, no fewer than a half-dozen “social-networking’ sites for pets have launched, each with a breathless media release dropped in our Pet Connection e-mail box, “the Web 2.0 revolution comes to pets!” and so on.
Yawn.
Folks, you are so late to this party. Not to mention: My stand on social networking sites for pets is that I’m not going to be spending much time maintaining an online social life for my animals. They can either come up with opposable thumbs for typing on their own or fergettaboutit.

What is your dog trying to tell you? Some scientists have an idea. My guess: “Let’s play!” “Throw the ball!” “Let’s go for a walk!” “Scritch my tummy!”

Hey now! Otter can come and be MY friend!
He’s ADORABLE!

Oh - and on the Reuters story - isn’t that just another iteration of the “Bow-Lingual” idea?

She. Her name is Otter Chaos, and it suits her. :)
And for the record, she wants to be everyone’s friend. Just in real life! With cookies!

Gina Gina Gina, you are completely misinterpreting your doggie.
“Food!” “Yummy!” “Cookies!” “Gimme!” “Gimme more!”

Ooops! Sorry Otter!
(Give her a tummy scritch and ask her to please forgive me!)

Oh my, Otter is adorable. Really adorable. And yes, I want to thank you greatly for not speaking for her in the third person on a doggy social networking site. Now, as long as we’re talking about zealously e-publishing our Internet challenged furry friends… I have some puppy pix for your consumption.

My future children will hate me for spending all my “awwww” credits before they were born. Unless you get more. Mine are running low.

My cat does not need a social network.
The only thing he would like to say to all cats is, “No Trespassing in my yard!”.
He hates other cats coming into his yard and the worst insult is a look-alike (another tuxedo cat) going in HIS favorite places.
No, my boy cat does not need a social network. Neither does my girl cat, for she only loves her human mom, me. No other cat for her, her stepbrother is only marginally tolerable.

I agree on the pet-networking site. I’m too busy to properly maintain my own online persona, much less invent one for my dogs!

Good grief, who knew?! I’m pretty sure that my dogs would prefer to do their social networking “in person”. Kind of hard to sniff butts over the internet……
And they would definitely prefer that I spent time playing and training them (as well as making them food and cookies) versus sitting at my computer…..

There have been a few times when I have felt that people who blog here have WAY too much time on their hands - which has occasionally indluded me.
But yes, this is WAY over the top.
Re: what Scout is trying to tell me… he adds “Go for a ride?… and while we are at it just keep going out into the country and stop at the farm…”
Did that today in the cold and all. He turned into a ice crystal encrusted mop making his own personal blizzard as he churned through the powdery stuff. Had to nearly drag him back into the truck where he melted like a snowman on the way home. He’s sleeping now.
Do you think I interpreted that correctly?
