Keep your pup happy — and your car clean — while traveling

It’s quite common for dogs — especially young pups — to experience sickness when they go for their first few rides in a vehicle. A short story in today’s Hartford Courant off the Washington Post News Service provides some training tips to help ease your pet’s queasiness.
Many pet experts believe that car sickness in dogs may be prompted by fear of the noise, motion or stress of being driven to an unfamiliar destination.
If possible start young, getting your puppy accustomed to driving places with you. For older animals try this approach: Invite your dog to join you in the car and give him a treat without ever leaving the driveway. Do this several days in a row. Then have him come to the car and just turn on the motor without moving, petting and talking softly to him then offering him a treat. Finally, go for a short test drive with him.
If all else fails, the article concludes, ask your vet about medications.

Lucky Dog: Why is this dog smiling? Perhaps it’s because he was just informed that he won the lottery. In fact, Boomer Irey’s happy mug has been chosen to be printed on the next version of the Michigan State Lottery’s “Lucky Dog” lottery tickets to be released in April.
My cousin, Scott Curtis, is the proud grandpa of Boomer, who is owned by Scott’s daughter Casey and her husband Scott Irey. Boomer’s resume also includes being named runner-up in the “Best Dog Smile” contest by the Hartz Pet Food Co.
Keep on smiling, Boomer!
