In one way, I loathe writing the holiday hazards pet column. I mean, every year we gotta do it, and it gets old after a couple of decades. But on the other hand, if it saves on pet’s life and spares one family the loss and the expense of a health emergency, well then, it’s a good thing to do and I’m happy to help.

In addition to the holiday hazards, we warn against getting a Christmas puppy, tell you how to get immediate advice on potential pet poisoning, offer advice on how to keep stray dogs from attacking and more:

Every year at this time we offer a list of the most common holiday hazards for pets: feeding problems, foreign-body ingestion and accidental poisoning.

The bad news is that many pets will end up at the veterinarian’s office this holiday season. The good news is that yours won’t be among them if you keep an eye out for these hazards.

  2. Don’t forget a warning about kitties and Chanukah candles. Whisker burns are OK, but fuzball Mouse would turn into a roman candle (let alone the risk of burning the house down).

  3. I had to get an electric menorah (Chanukah candelabra) for my house.

My cats didn’t stick their faces near the candles, but when they turned around after looking at them, their tails were a little too close to the flames for my comfort. And I do not want kitty flambe in my house.
