Tea-spitting double-take quote of the day

The Yorkie is overweight and annoying. So are many people we see in the supermarket. That does not mean we get to euthanize them.

That, my friends, is from Cary Tennis, the advice columnist from Salon, in a restrained answer to a 24-year-old who wishes to off her dementia-suffering grandmother’s animal companion because he whines. Which the 24-year-old woman does, in a letter that goes on and on so much I thought she’d never get to the end of it.

Skip the whining and jump straight to Tennis’ excellent response. It’s worth the ad you have to watch to get there. (Thanks, Pat.)

And remember, whiny, self-involved 24-year-olds of the world: You, too, will be old and incontinent some day.

  1. There are so many issues with this family. At the risk of getting on my soapbox, caregivers for terminally ill patients deserve to get assistance at a reasonable or minimum cost. A large part of the problem lies in the overwhelming burden of caring for elders without help.

The little dog is bearing the brunt of the stress in this family. Old people - and old pets - are often tough to deal with. However, the dog should not be euthanized for inconvenience. Some of the dog’s physical problems can be corrected (medication for incontinence, etc.). With a little bit of effort, the doggie situation can be helped. Wish the human problems could be solved as easily.
