Turkeys, thankfulness and open thread
By Gina Spadafori
November 22, 2007

First, the above picture is of turkey feathers. Aren’t they incredible? Makes you realize that Ben Franklin’s musings weren’t so odd at all. The image has been lifted from Terrierman’s post on the return of wild turkeys from the brink of extinction. Gorgeous.
Christie is cooking up a storm for her family. My family is having Thanksgiving tomorrow, because my firefighter brother is on duty today. (His 16-year-old daughter, fastest text-messager in the land, will be sending me emoticon-laden observations on her level of boredom today.)
I’m not going to write today. My English teacher/football coach brother and I are going to see “Beowulf” on the IMax screen downtown. My brother tells me his students say Angelina Jolie is naked a lot, so he’ll like it. I watched the video promo. To me, it just looks as if they’ve turned the classic into a very loud video game. [Update: In IMax 3D, it was pretty darn entertaining. I hadn't been to a movie in IMax 3D before.]
But one must soldier on. Because after that, dinner with friends.
So consider this an open thread for what you’re thankful for. Me? Family, friends and animals, work that I love, great reading wherever you look and so much more.
And you?

happy thanksgiving to you and yours, and to all the folks who read and post to your excellent blog. I appreciate the opportunity to share my thoughts on… things.

I am totally cooking. Endlessly.
Rebel and Kyrie are convinced it’s all for them.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Christie, you should share a picture of your holiday table. I know it will be totally GLAM, like the centerpiece of a magazine.
Right now I’m VERY thankful for my marathoning friends Bob and Laura, who just stopped by to take all the dogs out for a run. McKenzie and Pip will run six or seven miles, and Drew and Heather will do three.
Bob trains marathoners, through a great shop — Fleet Feet — that’s a chain now but started as one store in Sacramento. He wants me to get into his group to train for a half-marathon. It’s for the great middle-aged unfit like … uh … me!
I’m signing up. I have my doubts, but nothing ventured, etc.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We alternate Thanksgiving between my house and my Mom’s. I’m in the midst of some redecorating and my house looks like a bomb went off and my Mom is just too tired to make Thanksgiving. So…can you guess the answer to this riddle:
What do two tired, smart women make for family Thanksgiving?

RESERVATIONS!
Even though I love to cook, I’m thankful that someone else will do the cooking, cleaning up etc and the whole family can just enjoy the day.
No matter where you spend it, hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful!

I’m thankful for all the animals that *survived* because of the information available here during the rolling recalls.
All of you with furry survivors - please give them a hug from me - each and every precious one of them!

My kitchen sink just dropped down into the cabinet beneath it, disconnecting all the plumbing and sending all the water from my dishwasher all over the floor and down into the basement.
There is a plumber here, I don’t even want to know what he’s going to charge me to have come out on Thanksgiving Day for this. I’m in shock.
Comment by Christie Keith — November 22, 2007 @ 1:35 pm
Oh no!
(Is it okay if I giggle just a *little*?)
Hope you get everything taken care of in short order and without TOO many re-mortgages on the house!
Comment by The OTHER Pat — November 22, 2007 @ 1:55 pm
He’s still working on it. Meep.

OH MY GOSH, CHRISTIE!! Geez, girl, sending good thoughts your way. What a disaster.
I can’t believe you found a plumber on a holiday.

$350 will buy two and a half hours of a plumber’s time on Thanksgiving.
I have a sink.
Comment by Christie Keith — November 22, 2007 @ 4:30 pm
Well, that makes it easy:
Q: What are you thankful for?
A: Not having to call out a plumber on Thanksgiving!
Seriously, I’m thanking for this website and all the people who congregate here.

I’m so thankful that, after a childhood of being so allergic to animals that I couldn’t even go over to a friend’s house if they had a dog or cat and couldn’t ride a horse without suffering a complete respiratory shutdown, I finally “grew out of it” in the early 1990’s and have not been without at least one cat since then. I’m now blessed with a wonderful husband, four cats and our collie dog, Niki, my first dog. My life is so much richer for the privilege of having animals.
Our guests for this Thanksgiving are two little grey and white kittens (Juliet and Pippin)from the county shelter who I am fostering because they had a cold and needed to be in a healthier environment while they get well. In less than an hour, they will get their first taste of turkey!
I also feel grateful for having found Pet Connection and knowing that there are people like Gina, Christie and the various folks who participate in the blog, who may not always agree, but clearly all love animals a lot.
All the best to you!

One of the many things I’m truly thankful for is this amazing place where I visit every day. Thanks to all of you who so willingly share your knowledge and to those who share your love for your pets so openly! :D
Happy Thanksgiving all!

I’m a day late ~ not too unusual for me ~ but my wishes for you all, both 2 legged and 4 legged, is a wonderful holiday weekend and nothing but good health and happiness for the upcoming year. For all of the reasons to be happy and thankful this year, the fact that my sweet CJ, who crashed a year ago this weekend in ARF is still with me and doing very well considering the medical issues she’s had to deal with is best.

A day late, but no less thankful:
- For having a job that lets me adopt and take care of a menagerie of animals
- For having friends and family who understand that they’re not “just pets”
- For my long-suffering partner who’s a vet but doesn’t complain (much) about being the “onsite staff” to said menagerie (some of which, to be fair, are in fact hers)
- For the fun of trying to give everyone a bit of turkey ALL-AT-ONCE so no one gets cranky about it
- For Gina, Christie, Kim, and Marty and the whole PetConnection community, who helped me figure out what not to feed the kids earlier this year. Thanks SO much for all the info and support I couldn’t find anywhere else.
