Speaking of dog beds …

McKenzie and Heather

… which we have been:

Here may be the clue to why the dog beds I buy seem to last so long — even if my sheets and comforters don’t. It’s also a clue as to why a bought a very big bed. (Note the dog design on the flannel sheets!)

I think we’re going to be taking a nap this afternoon, all four dogs, the cat and I. Suddenly, I feel very, very old. Why? Because I got something “special” in the mail today: An invitation to join the AARP. They even included my new membership card, to be activated the very second they get payment. How very thoughtful.

How is it, exactly, that the AARP knows your 50th birthday is mere weeks away? How? How?

So does this mean I can get those early-bird dinner specials now? Oh gee, and I guess my skateboarding days are over.

Sheesh.

Update: And speaking of customer service — which we also were — I gotta say I like the folks at Arcata Pet Supplies and Boomerang Tags. They are quick! Friendly! And grateful for the business. There’s a reason why I keep going back — they’re flat-out great to order from.

  1. You too? My husband turned 50 earlier this month. He too got an invitation to join AARP. How DO they know???

    Happy birthday Gina!

  2. Poor, Gina. I know EXACTLY how you feel.

Amazing who sells lists of names and birthdates. Try hospitals - patient lists. I wouldn’t be surprised if your health insurance sells lists, too.

  3. Gina, If you are lucky you wont get the mail that my husband got after he turned 50. One day he got invited to join AARP, the very next day he got information about prepaid burial plans!!
He was NOT a happy camper.

  4. Oh, now I feel miffed. I didn’t get anything from AARP for my 50th birthday this summer! All I got was this cute little dog, a few months before my birthday…hmmmm. Maybe I got the better part of the deal!

  5. You certainly got a better deal than a sales pitch for a pre-paid burial plan!

  6. They buy lists from mail order companies. How do I know? Because I keep getting invitations from AARP under 3 different names - and only one of them is actually the name I am using post-divorce.

I’ve called them on this a number of times, and they still haven’t figured it out. So I’m not about to start sending them money when they can’t even figure out who I am . . . . . .

  8. Don’t feel too bad about the mailings from AARP. Our dog gets them too! ;-D

  9. Tickled to hear that you like Arcata Pet Supplies since I live about 15 minutes north of their retail store which is in….Arcata, about five and a half hours north of San Francisco. I generally go there to buy almond and vanilla scented Earthbath coat conditioner, so when I use it while I brush Niki I get a collie who kinda smells like cookies :-)

  10. I LOVE Arcata. I almost went to Humboldt State, when I was in my “I want to be a marine biologist” stage.

  11. Susan, we are almost neighbors (at least in terms of our uninhabited, remote North Coast) I live an hour+ north of Arcata and go there for supplies too! And they let Keagan shop there with us. Great store, nice people and an expeditious online service.

Gina, this reminds me of your quote about the world shrinking!

  12. If you people feel old approaching 50, what can I say. I still call my children and my daughter’s boyfriend “kids”—that is what I’ve always called them, though they are more or less around 50.

When I say I have to go home for my “kits” (my cats), people think I say “kids” and they stare at me, puzzled.

  13. I got my AARP invitation also close to my 50th birthday and wondered how they knew. And that was 10 years ago. They are also very persistent buggers, every couple of months since then, another one continues to arrive in my mailbox.

  14. I wouldn’t worry about this too much. I got an AARP invite when I was 23! So…I don’t want to look too much into what that’s trying to say about my life! :)

  15. I also received an AARP invite around my 50th earlier this year.

I’ll make AARP a deal. When they help to get universal health care for those of us under 65 (which is all Medicare is after all), I’ll support them before I’m 65. If not, see ya later.
