Jobs for Americans and a choice for consumers (thanks, Itchmo):

Planet Dog wants to put a leash on its global operations.

The Portland [Maine] company has moved production of its molded plastic products from the Dominican Republic to Springvale and plans to move production of its sewn products from China to domestic manufacturers by 2010.

“The economics of it have been better, producing those products in China, but — and it’s a big but — in the last six months there has been a big change in how consumers view products made in China,” said Catherine Frost, director of marketing and product development for the dog products company.

Planet Dog’s reversal on sending production overseas is still unusual, but other companies are beginning to look critically at the true savings and costs — tangible and intangible — of sending the work offshore and how consumers view products made elsewhere.

Here’s the rest of the story.

Drop them an  e-mail to let ‘em know they’re sniffing on the right trail.

  1. Do they do cat toys, too? Linsdey really needs some puffy balls that aren’t made in China.

Speaking of how outlooks are being changed — my neighbor invited me to her son’s birthday party today. First thought in my head was “Toys. China! Lead!?!” I went out to my church’s “preview flea market sale” and bought him a stack of “read to me” books instead.

My life is SO changed after Lindsey’s experience with the pet food recall!

  2. Thanks so much, Gina, for the http://www.icanhascheezburger.com/ website. It is a lot of fun to see the amusing cats with the novel captions in “catspeak” language.

  3. Additional comment—I cannot understand why so many items I want to buy come from China. It amazes me when I see a product made here in the United States.

I am so pleased to have the opportunity, once in a while, to buy American produce and products.

  5. Great show, Planet Dog. If you’re in CA I don’t know where. But not to worry, I will find a way to make purchases from your store!

    Wonderful news.

  7. OT but that dog kiss add sometimes makes it hard for me to read this blog when it features one fo the pictures of someone essentially frenching or licking a dog’s mouth. I don’t really want to look at that. Am I oversensitive? probably, but … ewww.

  9. This is good news.

However remember that Planet Dog has contracts with Chinese producers until 2010. So it will be a while before they are completely off the suspect China product list.

This is a boon for American Workers! Good going Planet Dog!

Does anyone know of test kits for lead for use on toys (fabric and hardware) not all kits work on every material.

  10. LfW,

totally right on the time frame. luckily the one factory is already producing the toys not just the molds, so some will be available. and their website has it marked as to what’s being made here from what i could see. the sale of those items will reinforce that they made the right decision ;) i have one of their dog collars from at least a year and a half ago (before i looked for China labels) it’s holding up fantastic and i will def buy more once i see they are made here. and i think i’ll buy some of their current USA stuff for xmas around here ;)
