The local shelters are in the first line of contact for the police and fire fighters. They should also be able to use county radios for contact if they are animal regulations. It's the best that anyone can do. I can't imagine this - except that it seems as devastating as Katrina except by forest fires. My back yard is fenced in and I have a 1 yr old male who is dog friendly. I will help however I can during the emergencies. Call me if you need assistence. I also have someone who wants to adopt a sheltie under 8 years old and in good health. Still, ashes all over the ground, jaundiced sky. Can't breathe outside. If you live in southern CA and are not currently in a fire zone: 1 - Make arrangements NOW for your pets in anticipation of having to evacuate. Get concurrence from the host family if you do not plan to use a VCA facility. 2 - If you live in a safe area, take limited walks with your pet, especially small ones. Their lungs will be affected more quickly by the smoke and ashes. 3 - Say a prayer for all humans and animals and especially for the magnificent firefighters who put their lives in danger.
