What I’m driving: The GMC 3500HD pickup (diesel)

The rumbling sound of a diesel engine always reminds me of my first night in the frozen wilderness community of Tok, Alaska. With temperatures dipping toward zero that snowy September night, the tundra truck drivers were forced to leave their diesels running to keep them operable in the morning. Even with our rustic hotel windows closed, the gurgling engines serenaded us throughout the night, drifting in and out of our dreams.
Those memories came flowing back to me as I started up the GMC Sierra 3500HD (cousin to the GMC Sierra 2500HD) full-size pickup truck for the first time this week. The diesel’s unmistakable rumble immediately gives one a desire to hit the open road to far off places with a load of kitty litter and Kibbles perhaps, and your best canine companion by your side.
So far though, the only adventure I’ve experienced is the challenge of getting this big brute in and out of my tight carport. It’s a task that would be impossible without the power retractable side mirrors that flip inward like the landing gear on a departing airliner, thus narrowing the width of the Sierra by a few precious inches.
A full review will follow — as soon as we rumble our way back home.
