My vet's office sells pet greeting cards that are the greatest. A selection of these for a variety of occasions would make a nice gift, and not too expensive.

A slightly different twist on the stamp idea.

There are beautiful stamps of different dog and cat breeds put out by various countries. Last year I bought about a half dozen rough collie stamps from a web site. They were mostly from former Soviet Union states (Uzebekastan, I-never-heard-of-you-Stan, etc). I had them mounted and framed to match my friends decor. She really, really, liked them. The stamps are pretty inexpensive, but framing with multiple mats can really get pricey.

I also do the donation to a shelter for gifts. Usually its the shelter my friend adopted his/her pet from, even if its not my favorite shelter. I also do this on all of my friends pets' birthdays (adoption days). I ask that they do the same for mine. Like Lynn, I don't need any more sweaters and my cats don't need any more treats or toys.

For friends who still use a lot of postage stamps, get a photo of your friend's dog or cat and order postage stamps online.

The gift that friends love: blown up photo of their pet in a nice frame. Always such a big hit.

A prepaid appointment with a local mobile groomer who comes to their door and washes Fido in the van.

For me, I love donations made to my favorite pet charities. Heck, more sweaters I don't need.

Picture frame mats that spell out your pet's name (like the ones here: http://www.framingachievement.com/namephotomats.htm)

Gift certificates for family pictures that include pets (here's a chain that allows pets: http://www.picturepeople.com/)

Custom pet themed jewelry (here's one example: http://www.josiesjewelrydesign.com/silver_dogs.htm)

The basset rescue group we got Rascal from is having an online auction: nybasset.cmarket.com

I'd like donations to my favorite animal charities like Wildrun.

And you can never go badly with gift certificates, from my fet pet supply shop, Home Depot, or Barnes & Noble.
