Sick Vick: Canine victims headed for sanctuary

October 2, 2007

From CNN (thanks, Pat):

All but one of the dogs seized in the Michael Vick dog fighting case will be placed with families or put in a “sanctuary,” where they will interact with people to overcome their fear and lack of socialization, according to court order filed Monday.

One of the 49 seized dogs “has a history biting humans” and will be euthanized, according to a motion filed in Virginia in U.S. District Court.

  1. Maybe someone with more media knowledge than I can tell me this… why does the CNN article use quotes around “sanctuary” in the headline and in the article? Am I being to sensitive here, or does it seem like they’re challenging the legitimacy of such an organization?

Or maybe I should just get more sleep.

  2. Er, too sensitive, rather. Definitely more sleep.

  3. it could be for a few different reasons John. they don’t want to identify where the dogs are going (from what i understand). all the points from the agency seem to be in quotes, so that may be it also. Or would it be to distinguish it from a shelter (or perhaps it is a shelter that will sanctuary the dogs?)?

i am actually a bit surprised so many passed on to the next step (NOT a slam on the breed!!!). those guys didn’t seem to have the best dog handling/care skills (understatement!). and who knew what they were breeding temp wise. i do know the aspca’s evaluation process from a couple years ago (observation and participation with it) and knew the dogs had a pretty fair shot, but still . . . great outcome so far :) maybe this will stop the some of the *fighting dogs need to be euthed* beliefs.

well, all I can say is a hearty [expletive deleted] to HSUS and PETA for their insistence that dogs seized from fighters must be killed no exception, no evaluation.

I assume the “sanctuaries” will be places like Best Friends or Villalobos or Spindletop, or experienced foster homes such as Bad Rap has.. you can be sure the dogs will only go to the most experienced and reputable places.

And I am pretty confident the judge is going to assess Vick to pay for the costs.

this is really wonderful news for these particular dogs, and for pit bulls in general..

  6. That is great news. Another myth debunked that most fighting dogs cannot be rehabilitated.
We will never find out where the “now lucky” dogs will be going. For their own safety , it should not be disclosed. Some sickos will try to steal/kidnap them.
Hope that Vick will end up paying for their care( thru the court) for the rest of their natural lives. That would truly be justice.
